  • Retractable Water Hose Reel

Posted by Davy on September 17, 2012 at 6:15 pm

The water hose on my bus is on a spring loaded retractable reel. The reel works fine but the 17 year old hose broke recently. I was pulling it out as always and it broke at about the 10 ft. mark. I put a new end on the hose that remained but I would like to eventually replace the hose.

I would rather not change the whole reel.

#1 It is in good shape…

#2 It would be a bear to get to…

So far I haven’t found replacement hoses. Maybe I am not searching right. I know a regular hose will not cut it. It needs to be more sturdy than that.

Can some one point me in the right direction?

I replaced mine with water hose from CW and it works fine. Less than $9 a foot. It will probably out last me.

I’m sure it be found for less than $9/ft. Here’s another option at less than $1/ft.

Unless you always pull out the full length, I would make sure the hose is rigid enough that it won’t collapse on itself when wound on the reel. Just a concern, one I haven’t proven one way or the other.

FWIW, the first 10 feet of my hose is yellowed and probably not going to make it much longer. When it fails, I plan to use the remaining 20-25 feet. In most cases 20 feet is long enough to reach the water pedestal. I also carry a 25-foot drinking water hose, when the water pedestal is too far away.

OK, time to get serious on this. Another 10-15 foot section of hose broke off recently in this terrible cold weather and I am now down to 10-15 feet of water hose.

I removed the access panels inside the bus heat bay and took a picture of the Reelcraft model #. It is 5835 OLBSW23. The reel looks to be in good shape but the base is rusted. It maybe a bear to remove if the screws holding it to the floor break lose.

The Reelcraft websited listed that same # with an A in front of it but nothing under the exact number above. I called and the replacement hose for my model is about $110, the base is $80 and the whole thing is about $400. In order to replace just the base and the hose the whole unit needs to come out and then I put the old reel on the new base and then install the new hose. That is probably more trouble that I want to get into especially considering the old reel is more than likely 18 years old.

    I see two options.

    1. I could hook a good quality short hose to the attchment point on the bus and eliminate the hose reel altogether. That could be temporary or permanent.

    2. I can find the correct Reelcraft replacement, bite the bullet and get it done.

What have others done? If you replaced the hose reel where did you buy it? The lady at Reelcraft said they are sold through distributors and the prices vary pretty widely. I have seen some other Reelcraft models online that are cheaper but I have no way of knowing if the mounting holes will line up.
