We sleep in truck stops all the time! I walk my 4 chis by myself while Butch fuels up the beast. NOW I’M BEYOND FREAKED OUT!
We both have our CHL licenses so I guess I’m gonna have to start carrying my sig nightmare sidearm when I do this from now on.
Butch is a big scary looking guy that can do a lot of harm, but if he is blind sided he can’t do anything. He just told me to quit reading this thread. LOL.

I’m going to have to be more aware now too. And since I’m in good ole California, all the conceal carry talk just makes me wish America was one country – when really it’s just a bunch of states that seem to do whatever they want.
The other day I was wearing a camo shirt I got from Bass Pro Shop at work. Not only did EVERYONE make the “Anybody see Walt” comment – 1 person asked me what the logo on the shirt was. I said it was a Browning logo. They asked, do the make shirts? I said yes, and guns too. They got quite and a little worried looking…. As though the logo was going to get up off my shirt and shoot them.
Another time someone called the cops on my brother for a holstered screw gun. At a Lowes no less. And it was the screw gun I got him for Christmas FROM Lowes. Yup….. That happens out here.

Just the kind of attitude you DON’T want a truck stop to have. Obviously there is little they can do after the fact. But they could have gotten the manager to talk to you, profusely apologize, and offer to review survellance footage with you until law enforcement arrives. Maybe they did that, from what you posted it sounds like they didn’t do much for you.
I might not understand the truck stop business, but having a strong armed robbery of a customer in the fuel lanes is probably the last thing I would want at my facility if I was the manager.
You mentioned this was in Indiana. How do you get the pumps to work in the truck lanes of an Indiana truck stop? Don’t they askyou for a DOT number? Because of that, we avoid buying fuel in Indiana (and living in Wisconsin we spend alot of time in Indiana!) with just a tiny amount of planning.
We don’t have dogs so I can’t rely on them, I’ll get a tire thumper to carry around. Hopefully my wife will let me get one of those thumpers that Buddy Brown showed us last summer at Jeff Rowe’s.

I’m trying to follow your story…. You didn’t have your wallet but they got $1,400 from you? Were you forced back into the coach to get your wallet?

Bad things can happen to the most prepared, aware and well armed among us. Best we can do is be watchful and careful. I do want to be informed of the scams, cons and hustles because that helps me to be aware.
I am on the side of making eye contact for two reasons. One, when I worked in retail many years ago they taught us to make eye contact and speak to people because that has a way of making thieves ill at ease.
I guess eye contact may give beggars a green light to approach but that is the second reason I make eye contact. I really like interacting with people and I do not want to live in my own little bubble as I travel across the country insulated from all the interesting, different and maybe even downright weird people that might talk to me. I am very likely to walk away enriched from a conversation with someone I made eye contact with and they felt comfortable enough to talk.

I am realizing the benefits of the fuel discount cards more than ever.
I don’t like sitting on my wallet so when I drive I place it in the glove box or a handy storage compartment. When I refuel I bring my notebook where I keep my fueling records and my two PC discount cards. I lock the coach when I step out of it.
The bad guys are only going to get my fuel discount cards and my fuel log notebook. No money. And if they do they will likely be in the security video because that is where the truck stop has its cameras. Until this thread I never realized how the fuel discount cards are protecting me from being robbed, but they are because I literally have no money on me when refueling.
So if you folks are concerned about truck stop safety get the fuel discount cards, use them, lock the coach when refueling and when fueling is complete drive away. If someone wants to steal from me I am going to offer my fuel discount cards and if they can figure out the 2 PIN numbers before I call Alicia to report the theft they are the luckiest guys in the world.

Chirs watches me when im outside the bus, while fuelling, walking the dogs etc. I try to stay in view of the windows.. Since we have an extended range fuel tank, which friends call us “the tanker”, our fuelling doesnt happen often. So, we can pick our stop. This scam-situation as the disparity between the preceived “haves and have-nots” widens could get worse. To the regular guy, a shiny 1980 Prevost XL 86 inche wide coach is just as spectacular looking as a 2017 X-3
We need to b e vigilant, sorry to say.

Sooo here is the whole story!
I pulled into the RV pumps , Flyn Js have a grass area between the RV pumps and the truck fueling . I was in slot No1 which was closet to the grass Island , when i got of out the Bus to pump fuel a man in a Flyn J hat walked up to me and says you have to Pay First.
What I do back then was though out the year is put some money aside every week so i would have money for extra stuff while traveling. I put the money in a envelop and when i would leave i would grab the money and keep it in the Bus.
So when he asked me to pay first i stated i want to fill her up and i have no idea how much she is going to take and she is pretty low. I don’t like putting a dollar amount on my CC and get credit back if you dont use the dollar amout you put on the CC
So i went into the coach grabbed some cash went back out to the guy standing there with that Damn Flyn J hat and said lets start with 600… this is when he start that story about this guy winning the lottery and he was over there …. he was keeping me distracted so his buddies could come up behind me. so when i was putting the rest of the money back into my pocket is when the 2 other guys came up behind me a smacked me on the head. grab the money from me . I wasnt knock out but i did fall to me knees and very disy. they jump into the back of a pickup truck that was on the Truck fuel side and off they went .. I tried to get there plate number but could make it out.
There was a flyn J worker that saw it and tried to warn me .. which i did see him waving his arms across the lot but had non idea what he was trying to do or even if he was directing his attention to me.
Yes we did look at the video and we couldnt get the plate number from the video either. We did get a good descprition and the police took a copy when they finally showed . This had happened a few weeks proir to some one else
we all know where Indy is located and in 3 hrs you can be 3 different states ! Damn this brings up some bad memories … i think i need a drink….
Just a FYI i also am a pretty big guy and can do some Damage if needed… I am leaving a big peice out, my 2 teenage girls were inside sleeping . so like i said this all happened fast and all that was lost was my pride and some money that can be replaced …
so with all that being said if it was going to happen it happened that best way is could … we still had a great vacation …. and we lived thru it…ALL OF US!

Wow Dave. For what it’s worth I’m sorry you had to go through that.
Dave’s story illustrates that anyone can be got and traveling in a Prevost or lesser large coach often makes us a larger or more attractive target.
I always lock the door whenever I leave the coach. This simple act has stopped several entries.
I try not to fuel at night. I also try not to travel at night. Can’t always accomplish this since much of our travel is work related and sometimes you just have to get there.
I try to park away from other vehicles. This lessens the chances that some non-driving fool will take the side off our coach and reduces hiding places for the evil ones.
We have our own clean bathroom and we use it.
We are always armed. I have been on the wrong end of a criminal’s gun. Life changing experience. I’ll do my best to make sure that never happens again.
If we stop somewhere and things don’t seem or feel right we leave. As long as we don’t stretch the fuel we don’t have to stop anywhere we don’t want to stop.
It’s a big beautiful world out there and we use our coach to see and experience a lot of it. We do not live in fear of evil but recognize that it exists and try to avoid it.

Out in Vegas yrs ago fueled my mci jumped in to pay came back found my dobie hanging on the arm of a man inside my bus. I pulled him out the door into the pumps and he took off running I gave my dobie a steak dinner that nite I now lock Prevost door with my new dobie girl inside Be careful out htere people

Did you check the Dobie to make sure she was OK? No diseases, no physical harm?
I wouldn’t care about the bad guy, but we all know how important our furry friends are.

Always know your surroundings Boys!
Keep safe out there, and displaying cash over $20 in view of many curious eyes is generally not a good idea … as many police reports concerning robbery would demonstrate.

Be aware, lock the coach when you exit, stay visible to the largest audience possible is what I try to do all the time.
And for the reasons stated in this thread is why I opted for a dash cam. We seem to be a good insurance target for some.
