Rest stop shenanigans….

I’ve seen you post before you have enclosed facility with only 30amp power. Any reason why only 30amps? How far is the main or a sub-panel from where you park the coach? If a reasonable distance, it should be easy to upgrade your circuit to 50amps.

Dick, there really is no reason to have 50a when parked….30a enough to run fridge, batt chgr and some A/C. Have 50a by us, but not needed. Geo.

I would like 50 amp and approached the owner about putting it in (on my dime)…. but he didn’t want to, so I didn’t push the matter.
The breaker panel is about 125 ft. away. We don’t keep it stored there in the summer (normally). We did store it last year for a short time as I needed to check on the house and it happened to be in July. The temp got up to 110-112 outside and the garage got up to 105.
If I were to keep it in the desert on a normal basis, I would insist on 50 amp and/or find another garage.

I also met a guy at Circle C Truck Stop, Exit 2 on I95 whose friend had just won big on a Georgia lottery scratch off ticket and was showing off part of his winnings. He wanted me to walk over to a line of trucks with him to see all of that money.
I was in my Winnebago Journey at the time, pulling a trailer full of motorcycles. I guess I looked “rich.” I told him that I wasn’t interested. He tried to persuade me. I declined, all the time walking to the travel center. I saw someone walking along the line of trucks about 100 feet away, who seemed to be watching me and the guy, kind of “shadowing” us. . The guy moved ahead of me and faced me, walking backwards while delivering his sales pitch. I stopped walking (so did the “shadow”), and suggested we were about to have a physical altercation. I was armed, but I really felt like beating this guy up.
As the guy was considering his options, the truck lot security guard approached in a golf cart, and both guys scurried away. The security guard gave me a ride to the travel center, and said that the truck stop was the sight of several robberies based on that scam and similar ones.
I always survey my surroundings before getting out of my coach, and I am always armed (except when I go to visit Melissa at the CJ).

George, yes, I wonder too if they were the same guys.
After reading all the posts here and on the other site where I posted, I think I’ll take a picture of the guy/guys before I leave the coach or maybe have Craig stand back recording as I walk to the restroom.
In all our travels in the last 9 years (motor-coaching), we have never had a problem. I know tomorrow is a new day. Coming from a family of law enforcement (two brother’s and a brother-in-law), I’ve heard many, many stories over the years. Maybe we have just been lucky.

The most innocent thing a person can do at a grocery store parking lot or a travel rest stop is have eye contact with another person.
This jester has just given a complete stranger the permission to smile at you, greet you, or worst of all approach you inside your comfort area or zone.
Without that seemingly very innocent first contact there would be no contact as your body language has first told the stranger your not interested.
I consider all interstate rest areas trouble, my short term parking as far away from other veh’s as possible.
Here is a simple a cheap suggestion while traveling the interstate. Next time your at a truck stop pick up one of those truck driver tire thumpers. Just a stick used by many “really old” long time truckers , like Truk and Bernie.
These were used to hit the face of the tire then listen for the sound. Driver was able to judge by sound if the tire was full of air quickly.
Store it on the right side of the passenger seat to get at it quickly. The simple stick is often seen at truck stops so no one can ever accuse you of walking around with a weapon.

Agree with Al on NO EYE CONTACT in these areas. Worst thing you can do in certain questionable areas. One should ALWAYS have situational awareness and be prepared. I too keep a tire thumper handy.

l prefer one of these. ANYTHING or ANYBODY you make contact with using this is going to be in pain to say the least. Available at any truck stop.

I think I will stick to my handgun.
I have concealed carry permits for 39 states. You ask what about the other ones… I avoid them.

It’s happened to me twice. Both times the guy faded into the night when I got off the bus accompanied by my big dog (who is pretty old and wouldn’t hurt a fly). I’m not interested in carrying a gun, but I see the utility of having one in that situation. Still, a big dog is a good alternative.
I think next time I’ll say something like “Hey, you don’t mind being recorded, do you? I left my dash cam turned on.”

No eye contact, yeah and they hit you in the side on the head. Wife worked contract on projects up New York City area years ago and she was surprised how folks avoided all eye contact. She was Houston born and raised. Thump those tires with a Colt 45. The thud sounds wonderful.

I had this same thing happen to me at a Flyn J in INDY (south side ) They got me for 14000 … I did report to the to me police ! I did have a 44 in the bus but it all happened so fast! I got out to pump fuel a guy walked up to me and give me that same storyand he was wearing a flying J ball cap . what i didnt see is the guys coming up behind me ….. I was lucky i dont carry my wallet when i travel. its hide . I waited 2 hours for the police and they NEVER showed . called 911 again and they finally showed gave them a statement filed the report .. that was the last i heard… I now only pay with a card and very rarely have cash!
