  • Repower 88 Prevost with 14L Series 60 & Ultrashift

Posted by Ken on January 13, 2012 at 2:51 pm

My name is Ken and I live in Middle Tennessee. I purchased my first coach in about 1990, a GMC 4104 I did the conversion and then repowered it with a 6V92. I purchased my Prevost in 2004. It’s an conversion. It started leaking coolant out the air box drains and instead of repairing the engine I decided to replace it with a current model 4 stroke. Even though I’ve done this type of job several times it always more trouble than I think it’s going to be. Here’s a link to slide show on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fybDVp_s59M . The engine is back in now and I’m in the process of connecting hoses and wiring. Maybe 2 or 3 more weeks before the test ride.

Thanks for starting a new forum that concentrates on Prevost Coaches.

Glad to see you made it. Now we have the go to ecm guy on board. My Autoshift is on the way in . Got last of mechanical worked out. Would rather had Ultrashift but already had transmission on hand. See Ya on the big slab in the fast lane. Bob

    Ken,

You have my attention. Seriously. My 97 Liberty conversion has the Series 60 with the six speed Allison. While I really like the smooth shifting can you share information about your 10 speed. My interest and I am sure others are equally curious is has it improved your mileage (I’ll be the answer is yes on that), what is your mileage and what does your coach weight and what speeds do you normally drive?

We had the opportunity to ride in a Prevost H3 with that transmission and I sensed as a passenger it shifted like a manual so it was not as smooth, but that the coach was more efficient. That was obviously a factory install.

I can’t answer the question about the fuel mileage. It’s not running yet
and it maybe some time after it does before I can get an accuate number. I want to make sure the actual
    mileage
agrees with the computer mileage. Any of the automated shifts should fit
in a Prevost that has a world transmission. In an older Prevost like
mine where the tag axle goes under the transmission there is an
interference problem. If you look at my slide show you’ll see where
I had to notch the tag axle to provide clearance when all the air was
    dumped form
the rear bags. In regards to smoothness of shifting, it’s not like an
Allision. I drove the truck before I pulled the engine / trans assembly.
You can feel the shifts like a manual, but I don’t have a problem with
the feel. I’m after fuel mileage and my setup should be about as good as
    it gets.
My diff ratio is 3.36 that should give me about 1400 RPM at 70 MPH.
Luvrbus over at the BCM site let us know about a new prototype Allison.
It’s a combination of automatic and automated. If you considering one of
these transmissions run the numbers on the all of your ratios. For
example your coach probably has something like a 4.3 differential ratio.
With the top gear of the Ultrashift .74 overdrive you be little high in
the RPM range, I think. Here’s a link to a YouTube video with the new
    Allison TC10 in a truck.
