  • Replacing Plastic Drain Valve on Aqua-Hot

Posted by Archived on January 26, 2019 at 3:08 pm

My drain valve began leaking on my Aqua-Hot over the past several weeks. The leak was rather slow, but after arriving down in South Florida the leak became more persistent. I had two different RV techs look at the drain valve. Neither knew the appropriate way to remove the drain valve without taking the whole bay apart from top to bottom including the Aqua-Hot unit. One of the techs was an approved Aqua-Hot tech and didn’t understand the drain assembly. The plastic drain the fits into the boiler has 7/16”hex as its inside diameter which allows for easy removal and access.

Steps to follow prior to removal of the plastic drain:

    1. Electric and diesel need to be shutdown and fluid allowed to cool.

    2. The coolant needs to be drained from the boiler. Saved or replaced.

    3. Remove the cover to the Aqua-Hot and reposition the diesel burner for better access.

    4. The actual plastic drain in the boiler terminates into a PEX drain valve assembly that needs to be removed. The plastic drain in the boiler lies behind the metal partition making it difficult to even see.

    5. Using a 5/16” hex (about 4 “ long) on a drive socket insert into plastic drain and remove. About 3/4 of my drain came out very easy, the other portion remained the drain threads. I purchased an Orbit Sprinkler plastic pipe nipple extractor to remove the remaining plastic portion. This tool come with both a 1/2” and 3/4” extractor, I used the larger on. I tapped the extractor with a hammer and backed out the remaining threaded portion. Success!

    6. The threaded drain opening was cleaned and a 31/2 brass nipple with a hose termination inserted after using Teflon tape and pipe dope.

    7. I flushed the boiler with about 4 gallons of distilled water and performed a leak test overnight.

    8. New boiler Antifreeze Concentrate added with the proper distilled water dilution ratio.
