  • Replacing headlights on 99 XLV

Posted by Gerald on September 20, 2013 at 10:34 am

Somewhere I picked up that Prevost used Ford Bronco headlights in the 90’s XLVs. I found this site below that seems to sell the complete LH/RH set for $120 each. They sure look the same. Has anyone replaced their headlights with Bronco units?

I don’t believe they are Bronco, but they are Ford in origin. I would take one to the local Ford dealer to find out precisely what model they are from.

Gerald, the OEM Prevo lights are ford units, but instead of replacing them, you might want to consider upgrading to Xenon HD lights. Coach Worx/Parliament did mine for about 4000(incl polishing the stock lens covers). You will not have high beams, but we found that we do not need them. If you feel you need the high beams, you can convert your driving/fog lamps to highs. the difference is literally night and day(pun intended).

From the looks of them, I believe they are the same I had on my Bluebird which were 1987-1991 Ford F150-F350 (and Broncos) headlights. There is a left and a right. I purchased some from Rock auto parts several years back to replace the ones on my bluebird..

TYC makes them with and without the chrome trim. You can search google for TYC 20157000, which is the right one without chrome trim for example. Rock Auto sells them for about $90 each.

Actually my main reflectors and lenses are ok. It is the orange directional lenses that are showing some signs of age plus a crack or two from stones. I’ll check into what Prevost charges for the units.

@Threegreens – If they are the 1987-1991 Ford truck type, I believe I have two new reflectors at the shop. I will look when I go out there in the morning. If I find them, just pay me back the shipping and you can have them. The ones I have, have the chrome trim around the outer edge. Let you know later Sunday.

If these are the turn signals that you need, send me your mailing address and I will get them out to you. These are brand new, never used.

I had to remove them when I replaced the ones on my bluebird as they use two ford headlights per side by taking the turn signals off one and bolting the pair together.

Michael, really appreciate the offer. Looks like they could fit. I’ll take a picture of our setup next time I’m at the bus

    Thanks again, Gerald

The head light unit itself, lens and plastic case, are 1991 Ford Bronco, just went through this a Prevost. Go to the local Ford Dealer and order the part, you will be money ahead, about $600 delivered. Your on your own with regard to the turn signals however while the headlight shows Ford, the turn signal is made by Gro0te…..BTW the trim is Prevost, not Ford, don’t think you need that.

The headlight is from a 89-91 Ford F-150 and can be purchased from Prevost or Ford. The one from Prevost is $104, I know, I just had them send me one. Be aware, the black plastic clips that hold the adjusting screws are different than the factory setting from Prevost, so you have to change them out to make them work. If you want to get the correct black plastic clips, order from JC Whitney but be prepared to pay through the teeth at $221 each. The turn signal light is from Grote and I could find them available anymore anywhere, even Prevost, so, I went to O’Reillys and purchased a lens polishing kit and reshined mine. Shine like new but still have the cracks, thought much more difficlut to find them now that the lens is shiny.

Rob, thanks. I may try the polishing route too. Surprising that Prevost used a different turn signal from Grote instead of reusing the matching Ford lens.

The radius on the ford turn signal is to sharp. Doesn’t match up. I have a old set I’m going to put in oven and try to reshape— some day. Will post if it works? To many other profjects to finish up before winter now. I have been looking for new set also. Bob
