  • Red Tailed Hawk at 70 MPH

Posted by Chris on December 23, 2014 at 8:38 am

    Greetings.

Just a quick story. Headed back from hunting this week and hit a hawk on I-70 at 70 MPH. Hit passenger side windshield and 11 year old son was sitting in the jump seat. Scary ordeal and we had a cab full of broken glass.

    • Used about 300 yards of duct tape.
    • Limped home to Tulsa.
    • Called Prevost-They overnighted us a new piece of glass.
    • Having a new one installed today.
    Prevost 1…….Hawk 0….Or maybe it’s a tie.

Glass only cost us $220. Much less than I expected.

Merry Christmas and/or Happy Holidays to all.

    …NEVER EVER LIST;

    1) Allow anyone to pressure wash your engine compartment

    2) Leave home without a fresh roll of duct tape

Many years ago I was driving south on US 51 (now I-39) between Stevens Point (WI) and Plover (WI). 51 had just become a divided highway with a median ditch between the north and southbound lanes. I was passing a pickup truck at about 70 when a hawk (red tailed?) lifted up out of the median ditch just in front of me, flew across my lane, and was hit by the pickup truck.

The pickup stopped immeidately and so did I. As I walked back to the pickup I could see the bird laid out across the grill with its wings spread out. The P/U driver was standing about 10 feet in front of his truck looking at the bird. As I got about 20 feet from the truck, the bird fell off the grill, landed on its feet, jumped around a few times, screached once or twice, and flew off into a field and landed on a high limb of tree along the fence line.

The P/U driver asked, “What the hell was that?” I said a hawk. He never saw it, only heard something hit the front of his truck, saw a wing tip above the hood, and stopped. He said it was screaching from the time he opened the truck door, until it fell off the grill … apparently not too seriously injured.

The P/U driver said he wanted to help the bird, but it looked so mean and upset that he was afraid to approach it (smart move).

Thinking back to first seeing the hawk it took out of the median ditch at an angle favoring the direction of traffic, so it had some speed in the same direction as the truck when they met.

Darndest thing I’d seen in along time.

I didn’t realize a hawk would go through a bus windshield like that. Now you have me worried about hawks, ducks, geese, and just about any large bird.

So Chris and Christy, what did you do with the hawk? Are you having it mounted to display in your coach? Was it still alive in side the bus?
