  • Recommendations on where to stop In Indiana

Posted by Chris on August 1, 2019 at 8:54 pm

Traveling from Chattanooga to Petosky up I-65 to I-69 through Indiana. Looking for places to stop around Louisville, Indianapolis or somewhere in between. Also I seem to remember that buying fuel in Indiana is difficult if not a commercial truck. Any info on that? Thanks.

TSD (Gina) told me the new cards can be used in Oregon and Indiana, two states that previously were a problem.

In late April we stayed at a Louisville South KOA in Shepherdsville, KY. About two miles off of I 65. About a half a mile off of I 65 the road becomes two lane. Inside the camp ground the roads and sites are gravel. We had a pull thru. No problem leveling or with the electricity. We would stay there again.

Louisville won’t give you a very long first day’s drive. There has to be Cracker Barrels all along the way.

Indianapolis: Indiana State Fairgrounds. It’s on the map. We’ve stayed there often. Full hook-ups. Not far from I-65. Inexpensive. 24 hour security by fairgrounds police who are packing. While Indianapolis take in the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum.

North of Indianapolis there are two rest stops. Between Lafayette and Merrillville. We’ve stayed in them often without incident.

I look forward to getting my new TSD fuel card on Monday when I get home and trying it in Indiana and someday in Oregon. Otherwise we do not buy diesel in Indiana, we just tanker through.

Indianapolis KOA, just east of the beltline on I-70 has pull throughs that are long and level. We stayed there a few years ago. Owners were nice and it’s a large clean campground.

Also, to fuel at the truck pumps in Indiana, you have to give the fuel desk an ICC number, as the prices set at the pump do not have fuel tax added. If you can get to the RV pumps, that would be easier, or fuel in Michigan. A friend of mine fueled there a couple weeks ago and it was cheaper than Indiana.

    Safe Travels!

    Dana,

You know of course that the numbers the fuel desk is looking for are printed on the side of trucks.

When fueling in Indiana when it asks for the ICC number I look at the truck in the next island and type in the DOT number on his door. Has worked every time for me.

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like the best thing to do is just avoid Indiana fuel. With my luck the truck next to me would be stolen and the ICC # would trigger something – LOL

If you absolutely have to fuel at the truck island in Indiana, contact George Prentice. He told me he has a number that works everytime.

The first and only time we tried to buy diesel in Indiana the truck desk told me to go to the “RV pumps up front”. That was a disaster. WAY TOO NARROW. Dinged up the stainless valence under the front bumper.

With the 1,600 mile range we have with our coaches, I just can’t see any reason to fuel up in Indiana if we plan ahead a little bit.

    Jon,

Been known to do what has been said here, even the numbers off of delivery coaches getting fuel, but didn’t want to cop to it on open forum…

Read how I expressed my view of the matter. I never said for anyone to do anything illegal.

I wouldn’t want anyone to defeat how their EGR system works either. Doing something like that is just an ugly fix.
