  • Reciprocating vs scroll compressor

    In another post a member posted the apparent replacement compressor for the CruiseAir:

    We have had a WaterFurnace ground water (geo-thermal) heat pump in our house since 2004. Prior to that we had a kinda “home made/DIY” ground water heat pump. So I have some familiarity with heat pumps, but am by NO MEANs an expert or even knowledgeable past some basics.

    I’ve noticed that our WaterFurnace uses a “scroll compressor” and that the Tecumseh compressor listed in the link about is a “reciprocating” compressor.

    Which is better? Scroll or reciprocating? Based on the reading I’ve done, it appears the scroll technology is superior to reciprocating technology.

    Is the advantage of one over the other material?

    If so, has anyone adapted a scroll compressor (like a Copeland that I think Waterfurnance uses) to a CruiseAir?

    I’ve done some research on this as I’ve been looking at options for the Cruisair’s I have. From my knowledge, the scrolls are newer and it’s hard to find a scroll that is 115V. They all appear to be 220v. They also appear to not be r407c or r22. R22 being gone. But the refrigerant I found on the scrolls would not drop in and allow you to use the evap. It would require a redesign because all the pressure switches would be different. Not sure if they would require lineset size changes. You’d have to redesign/engineer the system at that point. The best would be to update the system using an r22 compatible refrigerant (407c) for example that has similar pressures. This should allow for most of the system to remain the same, however, they all appear to be 220v. So, hence why many of the newer systems are using VFD it appears. I’ve been going back and forth, roof air, replacement of ACH14b’s with something like the new Aquaair, building my own replacement, or trying to source parts for existing units.

    I’m not sure of the route I want to go. Roof air would be easy route but looks terrible in a coach that wasn’t originally internally ducted IMO. Building my own solution wouldn’t be too difficult after your source the parts or have them custom made. It seems others have been working on this type of thing so it would be easier to piggyback the parts they selected. Aquaair is the best solution but have no idea on pricing or availability. Summer is approaching fast.

    Thanks Hidden! The more I learn about refrigeration the more I realize I don’t know. I’m anxiously awaiting pricing and actual use of the new AquaAire. As I understand it, AquaAire was developed as a direction replacement for CruiseAires.
