Rand McNally RV GPS for Ipad
Anyone tried this GPS for their Ipad for 99.00? Seems like it would be a good option to buying a stand alone GPS and for old eyes, the large screen would be great. My better half plays around with the Ipad map while traveling and it works well. Having all the GPS RV options with weather map overlay would be the best of both worlds.

Tom, the Weather Channel has a free app that over lays real time weather on the map of the US. Its got radar, radar and clouds,future radar,clouds,temp,feels like,UV index, 24 hr rain, 24 hr snow. It also has video and in season all in real time. You can send me the 990 bucks that you save if you want or save it for me and apply it to a pressure pro that i’m going to buy one of these days!!

Pressure Pro credit noted, I’ll use the government plan and raise the price 99 bucks and then discount it 99 bucks saving you big money!:)
I’ve used that weather and it’s great, but I would want the database for truckstops, campgrounds, rest airea’s etc.that you get with GPS software.

Alstays, as you know, has a really nice truck stop and RV dump apps I really like Iexit too. I guess the nice thing about the app you’re looking at is that its an “all in one”.

If your Ipad or ipod is not cellular and only Wifi enabled you need to buy the $130 GPS attachment. I wonder if this adapter works better in poor cell areas then using the cell function of your Ipad if you have it?

My wife’s Ipad is Wi-Fi only and when traveling we always have the Verizon Jetpack running and her map works really good.
Mine is cellular, so I assume I wouldn’t have to buy anything extra for the GPS deal. I would rather it ran off the Wi-Fi to save data time, but not sure if it will work that way. I guess I better dig a little further.

I have a 3g Ipad with the standard GPS that came with it. I use to have a “pay as you go” sim card and payed $14.50 a month for data. Now I run my ipad off my iphone hotspot and I’m saving some money.

However, I prefer to have a standalone GPS solution and upgraded from the Rand McNally RVND7710 to the new RVND7720. I have used both units extensively driving about 5k miles and the routing data was excellent. This GPS with a 7 inch screen is mounted to the left of the steering wheel. My iPad remains available for everything else.

Hi Greg, I have one of the original 3g ipads (it also has
wifi) it’s a little slow by todays standards but it still works fast enough
for what I do. With a 3g Ipad (and sim card installed) you can pick up a signal (just like a cell phone) and then “dial up” and get a “pay as
you go” data plan (no contract). I think you get 255 mb for $14.50 (I’m going by memory here) and if you just use it for your GPS maps app as you are traveling, it
lasts a long time. But you have to remember to turn it off when you’re not using it so it
doesn’t continue to suck down your time on the plan.What I’m doing now and saving about 400 bucks a month is running my Ipad
off the “hot spot” data on my iphone. Basically, the att plan turns my iphone
into a hot spot so I can now connect my ipad (or lap top) to the internet (via bluetooth) where
ever there is a 3g signal (which is just about everywhere these days).I hope I explained this clearly enough. I think I may have made
it sound more complicated then it really is.Fred

I switched my Verizon plan to the Share Everything Plan, saved money and now all devices share 6 gig of data. So I have 2 Iphones, an Ipad 2 cellular and the Jetpack Wi-fi for less than 2000 a month. It’s a fixed rate monthly and no other crazy charges.
I had to do all this because of the fear of Jon’s two can’s and string breaking!

Don’t make fun. I turned my phone on yesterday for 1 hour when I was away from home. (It didn’t ring, and I didn’t call anybody)
We actually have 4 cell phones and I checked with Verizon when they called to see if I wanted to upgrade my service and they said my average use time per month is up to 41 minutes. That took my breath away, knowing I am embracing technology.

back to the app. It’s really nice. Fast and accurate. I used it at home on a wifi only iPad and it just like 7710, which is nice and cuts back on relearning a device.

I have been working with my new set up using the hot spot on my phone, bluetoothed to my ipad, with just the maps app running and no joy. It works fairly well when I have a great signal but not so great or at all, in the middle of NM! I’m going back to the sim card set up for the ipad and buy the data as I go, at least that way I know I can get the info I need when I need it.
