Radiator Flush
Posted by Larry on August 3, 2014 at 8:11 pmOk guys, what are your suggested steps on doing a radiator flush? While I’m at that I suppose a flush on the Aqua Hot would also be a good thing to do. Thanks.

I’m am not a cooling system expert and I only flushed the cooling system in my coach once, and that was on a previous coach when I switched from Power Cool to CAT EC-1 extended life coolant.
The container had instructions. What was not in the instructions was a recognition that our cooling systems which include converter installed devices are complex and merely flushing and draining is not adequate. I drained the system about 4 times, each time after the initial flush refilling with water. It took that many times to get the drain water to run reasonably clear.

I did not attempt to do that. On my coach there were so many places to trap coolant it would be impossible even if all drains were open to fully drain the coach. Some places where coolant recirculates such as the HW tank there is no provision for draining the coils.
After refilling I used the Webasto pump to assist in circulating water through the system and to purge old coolant. I don’t know what would be involved in flushing a system that has an Aqua Hot.

You’re right Jon about so many places to trap liquid. Thought this might be a good job for a Detroit shop to do but not sure they will do a better job that I can.

I flushed and changed my coolant last November. It is pretty straightforward and the maintenane manual describes the process well. If you have OTR, don’t forget to clean the stainless steel coolant filter in the evaporator bay. Mine looked like it had never been cleaned.
The engine is self-bleeding and the house system (OTR) has bleeding valves on the OTR heat exchanger and the driver’s heat exchanger. Just keep those open until no more air escapes.
Good luck,
Gerald

The major problem I see is what to do with all that contaminated water. Four flushes is well over a 100 gals. I don’t have that many milk jugs.

I save oil pails for just that reason and Knox County, TN gets high marks in my book because they take every drop of fluids I drain from my coach at their recycling centers free of charge.
