  • Radiator Fan Gear Box; Grease for Grease Fitting

Posted by Ronald on March 9, 2018 at 2:31 pm

I am looking at my maintenance manual and it states that I should be checking the oil level in the radiator fan gear box every 1,000 miles as well as adding grease to the grease fitting every 1,000 miles. I have driven the coach since I have owned it about 900 miles.

The manual is not clear, at least to me, which oil to use for the gear box, or grease for the grease fitting.

Direction and advisement on the oil and the grease is greatly appreciated.

One other item. I plan to check the coolant level in the Surge Tank. If coolant is needed, what should I use and can I get it a NAPA?

I plan to run the coach throughout the weekend to give some exercise.

The gear box oil is a synthetic and is spelled out on the Prevost service manual for your coach. Prevost gets a lot of money for it, but suitable alternatives are available on the internet. I cannot remember the specific oil recommended.

As to the grease fitting, if you look at the end of the pivot point for the gear box to fan idler pulley arm you will see a grease fitting down in there, somewhat under where the fan clutch sits.

If it is covered with grease or grime it is not very noticeable but it is there. I think the lube schedule is a little on the conservative side. I do mine every 5000 miles which is my service interval. Gear box oil level should be checked as often as engine oil.

Thanks, Jon. I have the maintenance manual and see Recommended Lubricant Codes but I do not find where to interpret the actual code. I will keep looking.

Pay attention to what Prevost says……..the grade or viscosity of the gear box oil is critical.
