  • Radiator clutch assembly

Posted by Reagan on November 1, 2015 at 3:54 pm

    O K …Here goes…

After determining the radiator fan was squeaking and not truly “free wheeling” with the engine off …..and was binding with a grinding sound … I determined to remove the entire clutch assembly. I am very glad it did not have hair because I could have been in trouble…. After getting the wiring bracket in a moveable positon, and with the use of a long-necked engine hoist, I was able to work the fan and entire clutch assembly out of the coach’s engine bay without damaging the radiator..

After breaking the assembly down as far as I could go, I detrmined the ball bearings were simply “rolling around” within their “races” The ball bearing seal on the first bearing was obviously broken and the entire assembly looks worn for the most part. I feel certain the second bearing is bad also…The magnetic discs are very strong but worn…

My shematics are great but I still cannot get the balance of the assembly taken apart at this time.

    Question to the group:

Has anyone replaced this assembly by ordering the entire assembly or did you order the various parts that were worn and rebuild in-house using the potentailly reusable parts…. this is a ’98 Series 60 engine with only 130,000 miles and excellent care.

I know enough to be dangerous…but can get the rebuild done and reinstalled…. It may end up looking like a 454 Chevy “Rat” motor when I am through but who knows…?

Any thoughts? Am I wasting time or should I seek to buy a new assembly? Any costs ideas out there?

I have an account at Prevost….assume they would be the best source…

    Thanks for your input.

Just replace it Pres and be very careful with the install to get it adjusted so the fan doesn’t hit the shroud.

My 2 cents…. Years ago I stocked rebuilt clutch fans. What could go wrong with saving customers money ?

After 2 released some pieces or the installer screwed up one tried to go through the radiator, I had enough.

So my advice to you is; replace with a new fully tested and least likely to become an airplane propeller.

    Gentlemen:

Prevost from Elgin, Illinois does not sell the indivdual parts for the radiator clutch as a practical matter but did have the entire radiator clutch assembly in stock….actually in Dallas… I will await the delivery to deternmne which new “nuts & bolts” are not included. I will then replace all not included with high quality material. The Prevost parts department from Elgin, Illinois was very helpful by sending schematics and an actual picture of the assembly positioned in the delivery box.

The schematics helped to be able to totally agree as to what was not included. The “plate” behind the assembly was the only part not included.Very pleased with the service and the price was actually less than expected; $1299. delivered.

The system is not “tested” according to information the parts department had on hand. Regardless, I had to accept it the way it is. It is warrantied for six months as to parts…no labor unless the Prevost Houston installs it…Not going to happen….

Thanks for the advice to buy new… I felt that way but needed confirmation from you professionals. My total turn around in time should be about six to seven hours. I had to remove one of the large air pipes to be able to get the system out in the first place…another first for me….much easier than I expected.

Thanks again for the great help.Hope I can return the favor. If Betty and I ever get to attend a no rally rally, we will “cook-up jus som’ o’ dat cheeckin’ spegeht” a huh ahuh…
