R-6 Relay Valve
Posted by Dan on August 10, 2015 at 9:19 pmHello,
I know this might be a LONG shot but I’m looking for an R-6 Relay Valve Prevost P/N 64-0484. Prevost is 60 days back ordered. I have also tried a number of other places but no one has been able to crack the Prevost P/N code and some of them are in direct contact with Bendix.
Thanks!

Dan,
Bendix has an excellent customer support. I think if you contact them via phone or email they might be able ot assist you with the search. It is possible there is an alternate.

I don’t have it out of the bus yet – This valve is leaking a majority my air out of my system and due to the design of the air system in my bus I can’t build enough air pressure to lift the suspension and block. I’m working on designing and building some ramps.
Jon, I have a Bendix retailer contacting Bendix. If they come up empty I’ll probably go back and order from Prevost and wait my 60 days. I want to make absolutly sure I get the correct valve.
Will I be replacing all three valves, Yep, Will I keep a spare, Yep!
Thanks!

have your guy look at brake valve for semi trailers. our old lowboy had same valve as th 89 prevost. Also the online tech pub don’t go back to your year on most things. Try prevostcar.com 2nd page tech pub leave year open check mth coach if you need # use K747 that is sort of a universal older coach ###I will check my records tomorrow. Bob

Dan, you might be better off talking to tech support yourself.
I still remain confused about how your coach air system is set up and feel very uncomfortable with some accessory stuff coming off the wet tank.

Thanks, I have seen them also. Lots of people say that is an off the shelf part – and yes I have seen them on the shelf myself.
Here is my concern.
When I went to NAPA they pulled up Bendix R-6 and it had 30+ sub part numbers. As it sounds, they have different port configurations and possibly internal differences like the crack pressure of the springs. So, to maintain the exact configuration of by brake system I’d like to replace with the exact correct part. Prevost is understandably tight with the crossreference to other P/N’s. I told them over the phone, 60 days is a long time to make your customer sit on the side of the road…….I may make a last ditch effort and call PASS to see if they can help.
Thanks!

In a pinch you can call a tire service truck and have them air jack it up and block and pull parts if needing to get it quick. Seen it done years ago on a MCI. Just cost a service call.

I have a box of relay valves. Later today I’ll check and see if I have one. Valve should be same as MCI of same v intage.Mybrake guy said he could have one in 2 days. I think the air canister size has more to do with it than anything– you should have 30/60 on drive. Alll ports on valves are marked/stamped with supply or delivery.. the controll is easy to tell. Bob

Dan,
I have asked Prevost parts for the trade number or the manufacturer’s part number and they have never hesitated providing me with that. It was usually in the context of dealing with the wrong part or an issue with a part, but they have been good about assisting me. See if they can give you those numbers and then you can search all sources.

I did ask Prevost and they would not provide the number. Still waiting on a response direct from Bendix and one of their dealers. When I get time I’ll call PASS if that does not work out I’ll just order from Prevost and wait. I’m glad I did not sell my tent as I’ll be sleeping in it this weekend:)

Thanks Bendix tech guys and everyone who responded.

Just a heads up. We got the relay valve off last week but it looked nothing like the valves I got from NAPA. We cleaned the valve from the coach and found the p/n which matched the Bendix number. I made a second call to NAPA and they confirmed they sent me the correct valves and I looked online and confirmed the valves they sent me match what they have online. Again – they look nothing like the valve off the bus (and the ports are in the wrong spots) We made a quick call to Luke at US Coach and he had one on the shelf. He sent us a picture and it matched. Ordered it and installed perfectly and it works great.
We also found the hole in the powersteering line. It was crushed by the rear end. Apparently my bumpstops don’t stop the rear end from hitting the chasis. We spliced the line as I did not want to pull 40 feet of powersteering hose through the middle of the bus! Re-routed slightly to reduce the chance of it beeing crushed again.
Need to order up some new bumpstops! Add those to your LONG list of rubber things on a bus that age out 🙂

bulkhead on last bay should have a fitting where line passes thru, This creates a splice/joint in hose . rear to pump /front piece to steering box. Total of 2 hoses to front but each spliced at bulkhead. For future referance.

That’s what Prevost said also – but we were unable to find the bulkhead connection under the driveline and I did not want to remove all my water tanks to see where it came through. Mine’s a bit odd – I have two swing up doors just in front of the drive wheels (battery box on the street side, and the fuel tank on the curb side.) I suppose the connection could be above the fuel tank. Oh well – it holds fluid now 🙂
