  • QUESTION ON XL OTR HUMIDITY INDICATOR

Posted by Paula on July 19, 2013 at 5:56 pm

We have a 1990 XL 40′ converted by Marathon and we are in the process of having the OTR converted from R-12 to R-134. The repair shop has received all the parts Prevost says we need to make this conversion except one item, it is the Humidity Indicator part number .452524. Does anybody know what this is? Is it something that goes into system permanently or is it just a tool to use while you are evacuating the system to measure the amount of humidity still left in the system? We are having a hard time getting this part and nobody including Prevost can tell us what it is for.

    Thank you

I don’t have the drawings of the system but I suspect it is external and is used to affect the cycle such that it does not ice the evaporator during high humidity ambient conditions. Keep in mind this is a guess.

It would not be used internally. The system when sealed and prior to charging is to be moisture free which is why the system is pulled into a deep vacuum prior to charging with refrigerant.

    Thanks Jon.

OK, if it is something external then do you think that we can go ahead and put the system together and get it charged and working without this part? It sounds like if it got into an icing situation it would not work right. We are interested in getting it put back together and at least functioning again without having to wait weeks for this part. I understand that you are just guessing, and so are we.

    Thank you for the help

I have the humidity indicator soldered into the copper pipes in the condenser compartment. It is a small sight glass that turns pink if you have moisture in the system which can cause corrosion and all kinds of problem. I don’t think it is critical to the operation of the system as long as it is maintained.

I stand corrected. Still cannot see how moisture can get into a pressurized, sealed system with a dryer to insure none is present.

Tthe moisture detector is on top of the dryer and has a little plastic cap. The part number at Prevost is 950262 and cost 119.13. Prevost calls this part a Dryer Filter. I know, I just had to buy one when they serviced my OTR.
