  • Question for Gearheads … literally

Posted by Ronald on November 26, 2015 at 12:53 pm

I am mechanically challenged and am wondering how gears influence how fast a motor turns.

I have a 24 volt DC motor with the following specs.

    24 volts – 30/1 – 1526:1

what would be the outcome if I were to replace it with this.

    24 volts – 23/1 – 989:1

    ???

    Thanks,

    Ronald

The speed range is slower as is the gear reduction, (I think). Not really enough information.

The “new” motor will drive whatever it’s attached to at almost twice the speed of the original motor, assuming the new motor can develop the torque required to drive the attachment.

The reasons for reduction gearing are to reduce speed and increase torque.

What is the original motor driving?

I am still trying to find a reasonably priced replacement motor for a couple of our XLII awning window motors.

The first one listed is what is installed now. The second one is the closest I have found, yet.

Anyway, twice the speed of the original would not work. It would be way too fast.

    Thanks,

    Ronald
