  • Pulling a Stick Shift

Posted by Davy on August 16, 2012 at 8:38 am

I am getting the Green Machine – 2006 Scion xB ready to pull behind the bus when a I am finished for the season with the gigantic trailer October 1. I am planning to install the base plate tomorrow and will probably test it on a 400 mile run I need to do Sat-Tues.

It is the first stick shift I have pulled. I am a little concerned about the transmission slipping into gear during transit. Anybody ever experienced a problem with that? Do you consider it a serious risk? If so, what can be done to minimize the risk? Anything else that I should be aware of?

    Thanks in advance.

    DKO,

I have towed 3 stick shift vehicles and none of them ever went into gear. Having said that I need to point out all were 4WD and I always towed with the transfer case in neutral so I actually had double safety.

The only thing I would suggest is you check the owner’s manual to see how they advise you tow it wheels down. I cannot imagine any series of events that would cause a towed vehicle to slip into gear.

Yes, this 2006 Scion xB is towable four wheels down and the instructions are simple. I was just wondering if there was any reason for concern or any special precautions that I should take with the stick shift.

    Thanks,

The Blue Ox base plate is installed on the 2006 Scion xB. Everything went very smoothly. You can see more pics of the install HERE.
