  • Pros and or Cons for using a 12 volts water pump

    I want to do what Jon has been recommending. That is, to install a spare fresh water pump for when our primary Headhunter Mach 5 pump heads South. The Headhunter uses 115V and its receptacle is tied-in to our Crestron / Silverleaf system. I can switch the pump on and off using the Crestron or Silverleaf control panels. So I should want to keep this functionality.

    Jon suggested to get a 115V Shurflo. Found one on Amazon. Shurflo Industrial, 198GPH, 1/2 inch, 50 PSI for $79.99 and adding a 2 gallons accumulator tank adds another $142.00 – These are separate units and need to be plumbed. The benefit could be that either unit can be mounted where there is space for it.

    Alternatively, I could buy a 12V system, where pump and tank have been plumbed and is ready to be installed. It is a Seaflo system, also at Amazon @$220.00 – 5.5GPM, 60PSI. The benefit is, it is one unit but requires more installation space.

    To continue using the switched receptacle, I would then have to utilize a 110V to 12V converter.

    What are your thoughts?

    I’ll be doing the same Ronald, but I will use the 120v source for a Shurflo and then plumb in using the present expansion tank already in place.

    The specific pump or power source is less important than ending up with a second (backup) system that does what you want it to do if the primary fails.

    In our case I wanted to be able to flush the toilet and have enough water flow for a shower or to wash dishes. To get a low flow pump such as the Shurflo I used to be capable of flushing the Headhunter toilet I had to add an accumulator tank. If I could have fit a second Headhunter pump I would not have needed the accumulator tank.

    I picked 120V because the existing pump plugs into a 120V receptacle, so I used the same volt back up pump and would use the same receptacle so I could turn power on and off to the pump at my main electrical panel.

    There is no right way to do a back up pump as long as the back up works when you need it to work, in a way you need it to work.

    My thought is when on inverter power why convert DC to AC and back to DC For the pump. I would stick with the power you have there.

    My headhunter pump is 120 and the receptacle is right where I need it. I would have to run a dedicated 12 or 24V circuit into the water bay for a backup pump so being lazy I just stuck with what was there.

    My inverters are only pass through devices when I am on shore or generator power which is most of the time, but when I ask them to run my water pump(s) they tell me they don’t mind doing that because they know I am nice to them for not running AC units on inverters.
