  • Progressive Industries Surge Protector

Posted by Archived on June 13, 2018 at 7:50 am

    All,

Our Progressive Industries EMS-PT50C failed last week. We had used this surge protector for over 3.5 years. Anybody using one of the new Progressive Industries surge protectors? Any other suggestions for external surge protectors besides Progressive Industries?

Hope you have the receipt for proof of purchase Reece, otherwise you’ll have to just throw it away.

If the unit failed and as long as there’s no external damage, Progressive provides an easy method of replacement with a refurbished unit. I don’t know of any surge protector that has as good of a reputation as Progressive.

I think the other company has a pretty good reputation. Wish I had looked into it before I bought one 🙁 (possible sarcasm may exist in previous statement).

Next one will be a progressive industry one because of the reputation they do have 😉

Email or call them Tell, them what happened. Let them tell you what to do. They usually are very proud of their product. They may be able to tell you what part you may need. You may be surprised at what they do.

Take a look at the Hughes autoformer part # RV220-50SP-50 amp. I also had the progressive and it lasted about 3 years and died. I’ve had the Hughes about 3 years now and love it, a higher priced unit but very well made. Just my opinion.

When shopping for a surge protector I communicated with the owner of Progressive directly who had designed the unit, was very responsive to me. By the time I got around to pulling the trigger, the company had been sold to the same people who own Guest/Marinco. Bought this until in December, used it extensive on our 78 day coast to coast expedition of the southern border states, and then shortly after we got home the cover broke at the hinge.

I emailed Progressive, the new company responded, and immediately shipped out a new cover.

I realize a new cover and a new unit are two different things. I would reach out to Progressive and tell them what’s happened. I’d like to think they want to exchange your defective unit or a new one so they can dissect the failed one to find out why it failed. This is the guy I dealt with:

    All,

Thank you for the information that has been provided about the surge protector issue.

Contacted the warranty department at Progressive Industries late last week and spoke with Dave about the issue with the surge protector. I told him that I did not have the receipt. Dave told me to file the claim without the receipt and just submit a picture of the surge protector in the picture that is required for the receipt. Dave stated that my claim would probably be rejected and when I received the denial notice to call him back with the warranty claim number. The claim was denied and I followed Dave’s direction on how to proceed. Dave did a manual override and I received notice today that I would be receiving a surge protector from Progressive Industries.

I am very pleased with the customer service at Progressive Industries.

Good to hear. Did he mention whether they would like the busted one back so they could take a look at it to see what went wrong?

    Dick,

Progressive Industries did not want the old surge protector returned. Now I have a very large paper weight on my desk.

    Tom,

Sorry to read about their lack of flexibility on your claim.

Does anyone have any input on the Progressive Industries SSP-50XL. From looking at the description, it seems to protect against surge, open ground/neutral, reverse polarity, miss wired, etc..

Does basically the same as the EMS-PT50X without a digital read out.

Does the EMS model do anything more for actually protecting things or is it just provide a more useful readout?

    Charles,

From reading the chart on the Progressive website it looks like over and under “protection ” and reverse polarity “protection ” are the two additional safety features claimed with EMS versions plus the additional information from the readout.

I have had the SSP 50XL since 2013 and recently, about the time warranty issues were being discussed on PC I had an LED burn out. After reading Tom’s bad experience I couldn’t find a receipt and finally checked my Amazon account and learned you can access every order ever made. Printed the info and sent with a picture. Warranty approved and new unit sent .

The EMS wasn’t available when I purchased, but I would probably buy it now. Amazon had the best prices I found.

We have the EMS version. I like the LED readout to verify I have power at the pedestal when I flip the breaker on and as a second check as to how many amps I’m pulling.

During our 78 day expedition across the southern states this past winter, I had the unit “trip” twice due to low voltage which probably saved something in the coach. Both times I explained to campground management they had low volts and what the cause might be. In one case, the guy looked like I was making this all up. In the other I guy seemed to understand that he had a problem and knew an electrician. We were leaving after one night so I don’t know what he did.

Just six weeks ago we stopped at a casino for the night and there was NO power on the LED when I plugged in. Manager came and called for the facilities guy, who instantly believed the Progressive device and moved us to another site which of course they both watched as I plugged the Progressive device in and flipped the breaker. They smiled when they saw 122 or 123 volts.
