  • Prevost PASS – I’ll pass next time

Posted by Jimmy on September 16, 2019 at 9:35 am

My rear side didn’t lock as I was about to pull out for a Nashville trip. Dick from Wisconsin is always encouraging us to use Prevost PASS. So I thought I would give it a try.

I was relayed to a tech down in the D.C. area. I explained the problem and he said “oh, that’s easy. Lift up the tag axle”. Followed instructions. “There, that should do it.” It didn’t. “Mmmm. Try turning off the ignition for 30 seconds to reset everything”. That didn’t work either. For the next 15 minutes he fumbled through manuals online, clearly this was out of his league. I stated there was a red light on at the slide module in the bay. “Oh, that’s not good”. I asked him if he could call me back in 15 minutes.

I got on the phone with Tradewinds who had previously worked on a slide emergency. Kyle and Scott walked me through the process 1-2-3. Kyle explained that the red light was confirmation that the front slide was locked…that’s a good thing, not a bad thing as the PASS rep stated. Scott had me turn a screw on the slide module from 10 o’clock position to 2. Pin locked and then turned screw back to 10. I’m ready to roll.

Thank you Tradewinds. No more PASS for this guy.

Good on Tradewinds for getting you going. I would not write off Prevost PASS completely.

I called PASS with an important question late at night alongside the road and the guy told me to call the Prevost facility nearby because they were open 24 hours. I knew he was wrong, but questioned him politely. He really believed it.

I hung up, called the local Prevost shop and the recording said to call Prevost PASS for after hours service. I called Prevost PASS again, got a different guy and they helped me a ton.

I wonder if Prevost PASS does a quality service questionnaire on a random selection of calls (or on all calls like we did with all our mortgage applications). I’m reading some inconsistent information and results.

Our coaches are complex. Even if we focus only on the chassis the amount of knowledge required to answer all questions approaches infinity.

Way back when all coaches were 40 feet XL with 8V92 engines we could expect someone to be able to handle about any question. But that is not the case. There are now 3 engines used in our coversions and multiple transmissions. We are dealing with XL, XLV, XLII, and X3. We also have several veriosn of H3. We have no slides, single slides, two, three and four slides and slides have about 5 versions. We have multiple versions of DDEC and the Volvo equivalent. We have at least 3 braking systems. The EPA emissions systems are varied significantly. Electrical systems have gone from switches and relays and miles of wire to complex multiplex systems.

My point is whoever we seek information from has to get accurate information from us about the coach and then somehow do one of the hardest things in the world, which is to diagnose a problem via the spoken or written word without the benefit of the use of senses to aid in the diagnosis and response.

Look at how difficult it is to respond accurately to questions on the forum and it becomes apparent the person manning the PASS phones has a far tougher job than the mechanic in the shop who can hear, smell, touch and feel the coach and its problem.

I am definitely not suggesting anyone shop among the various PASS technicians for answers, but to try to understand those folks might actually welcome an owner who really prepares for the phone call, gathering as much information as possible, no matter how trivial it might be, and to suggest as nicely as possible if the answers are no help, ask if someone else at PASS has some alternative ideas.

I have to say that I have an ’88 coach and have had to call Prevost Pass 3-4 times. In EVERY case, they have been able to get me in touch with the right folks to help me out of a serious situation. Whether is was where to tow the RV or where to go for required repairs they have not only made recommendations but contacted that provider to let them know that Prevost was sending a customer to their business. Prevost Pass called the business and called me to see if the repairs had been done of if follow-up was necessary. I have gotten my bus serviced in places that have never serviced this kind of coach and it has been handled professionally and without issue. I wish I could say the same about the factory Prevost service centers (and I have been to them all).
