  • Prevost Owners w/Pets ?

Posted by Archived on October 17, 2012 at 10:33 pm

As a new owner of an older Liberty Coach that I have visions of traveling a lot and enjoying the Coach with My Lovely Wife. She has got pretty attached to Our two Doberman puppies , And says that they will come with Us. I said well We can put them in an enclosed trailer in their cages of course. She says they will ride in the Coach. But I think the Trailer will be fine. With the Harleys , And a Golf cart on Steroids ( Ford Think , Neighborhood car )

My question is , Do the nicer campgrounds that cater to Prevost Owners allow Pets ? And How many of You have pets that You take along ?

    Thanks,

    Rocky Lane

We have 2 small poodles (Toy) and 1 Med Lg Hound Dog….no problem in traveling…well behaved…only negative is when some “varmit” is outside at night and all 3 want to have their day in court!

For about 15 years we traveled with our min. Schnauzer. We bought our first coach just so our pup could go with us. We had the option of traveling in our plane, but would never feel comfortable with him in a hotel room assuming they would allow that.

He traveled in the coach and the coach was his second home. A whole lot of folks bring their pets with them. Inside the coach.

It seems to me that more folks travel with a pet than don’t. The pet usually gets preferential treatment, that is run of the camper. Many travel with more than one pet. Pets are after all part of the family and not to be treated like a pack of hunting dogs.

On the web programs like RV park reviews list the campgrounds and their websites, these sites list the park policy about pets. Very few exclude pets alltogether as this would have a sever negative impact on their business.

Your pets though must be leashed, managable and quiet (no barking or howling) in the park and you must clean up after them. I have seen several campers expelled from different parks because of their pets.

Some “crate” their pets when unatended in the camper.

A difficult time for the owner of a pet while out camping and the pet as well is when you want to go out for a long day and leave the pet back at the camper, possibly for an entire day, you must accept that there will be a mess to clean up. The scene is especially bad if you are in 100+ degree days and your campground has periodic low voltage and your airconditioning goes out. Unattended circumstances such as that are worrysome and problematic.

I will add this: Regardless of whether the electrical supply regarded as fail proof or not a pet owner must take into consideration the consequences of an electrical failure in his/her absence.

Jim raises an excellent point about keeping the coach comfortable. Even though we have auto-start if the electric at the pole fails our house AC units will shut down and even with the generator running they will not restart.

We tried to not travel with our pup in the heat of summer for that reason.

We have 2 Doberman puppies that are 3.5 Mos old. And Dobermans chew on everything for several Months ! They are very Smart , Lovable and Loyal Dogs . Once they get past the chewing stage , They might be allowed in the Coach ?

So, Jon, why no A/C if the gen set is on?

That’s a big thing for us when Prancer is “in the house”.

Depending on the type AC and the controls if electric power to the coach is interupted the ACs may shut down and will not restart if power is restored.

If power is disrupted and then restored on my current coach the ACs will not restart without manually restarting them. On my previous coaches they would restart without intervention. It is worth checking because the safety of pets is involved, and depending on how your coach and AC controls are set up it may be a problem or not.

There is another issue, rare, but it happened to us. We were in a park and the coach next to us was getting a wash job on the site. The crew washing the coach thought they were doing us a favor to prevent an electrical shock from all the water spraying around by turning off the shore power to our coach. Only problems were we were not in the coach, but our pup was, we were gone for the morning, and they forgot to turn the power back on when they were done spraying water. Thank goodness the temps inside the coach had not gotten too bad. We were pissed.
