Prevost liberty solenoids
Posted by ed on April 2, 2020 at 4:42 pmThere are three solenoids in my electrical bag (94 liberty classic ). I know the top 3 are for regular dc lighting and tivoli dc lighting. What is the third solenoid drive ?

By solenoid do you mean relay?
I’m not being a smart ass, but in the absence of an answer from Liberty disconnect a wire from the coil (not a load wire) and see what doesn’t work, or in the reverse, use a jumper to power the coil to see what is working.

I think solenoid and relay are almost interchangeable. But usually a solenoid is the round cylindrical ones and relays are the square ones. But they are termed interchangeably.
im rewiring my coach. New inverters new disconnects fuses etc. so some things are offline right now and the way they wire with this mid fwd dash and other loads – just trying to determine what it is before getting all the loads operational.

I was thinking of the silver”solenoids” such as the type that used to be used on old cars for starting so I was sure that was what you meant.
My 87 Liberty was an all 12 volt system but it did not have an electrical bay, but at least 3 12 volt DC panels in the back of cabinets in the house, My 97 was a 24 volt coach with an electric bay so as you can see my knowledge of how Liberty did yours is zero.

i think thats what we were both talking about – the silver cylindrical solenoid that liberty uses. and yes those were the same ones that are sometimes used to start engines. so yeah, those things. usually four wires (two small drive wires in the middle, with the common on larger lugs on each side.
I thought it was fairly common liberty setup in the 90s. top 2 solenoids were to control tivoli and non-tivoli lighting, and third solenoid – who knows.. lol

You mentioned changes to the coach so Liberty may not be able to help you. If the third solenoid does look like it was installed originally by Liberty someone there at Liberty should point you in the right direction.
But you may have a situation where you just have to energize it or disconnect it and see what works or doesn’t.
Is there anyone on the forum with the same vintage Liberty that may still have an owner’s manual with a possible answer?

I’ve got it powered up for now but still don’t know what it’s driving. I’ll figure it out later when I have more time.
liberty is not very responsive right now. Probably related to the pandemic. But I’ve left two messages with the assistant service manager (service managers voice mail has been full for a week and you just get disconnected). So outside of the receptionist answering phones – she is just passing the phone to their desks and it doesn’t seem like they are being answered. But again – I imagine they are being affected by the pandemic.

There are only 2 of these metal solenoid/relays in my ds #2 electrical bay.
There is a 3rd but it in the electrical box above the detroit engine for the detroit starter.

Anthem: are you replacing parts, pieces, and components? Or are you re-engineering the electrical system Liberty originally installed in the coach?

Mostly updating/replacing. Definitely not “re-engineering” though there isn’t too much to re-engineer. I’ve replaced the pair of original heart ems2800 inverters with a pair of Victron multiplus inverters in parallel. That along when the lithium batteries, with marinco cutoffs for the inverters, class t fuses for each battery and corresponding battery protects and what not. Going to replace the push in klixon breakers with real dc breakers and that’s where the third solenoid came up. The top 2 solenoids (which drive the lights) are branched off of one of the klixon breakers. The third one is directly connected to the main load switch. So was just wondering what that was.
picture included from previously working on it. Have to take a more current one. Lol
