Prevost Crash Worthiness
Posted by Alvie on November 23, 2014 at 9:45 pmSOB owners or prospective owners often ask why a pree vost [sic]? Often I just say that out of love for family and those who may travel with me the safety factor is reason enough to own a “pray voe” when compared to “sticks and staples”. This article highlights what can happen. http://www.grizzlylaw.com/rv-motorhome-crash-worthiness/

Fatal Car Crash Caught on Police Dashcam – YouTube
Above is a YouTube video showing a mid-80’s Chrysler 5th Ave. striking the rear of a Prevost bus that was pulled over by a police car. Listening to the dialog of the LEO, it was evident that the passenger perished. Very sad.
The police dash camera captured the crash as the right passenger side of the car clipped the left rear of the bus. The car was crushed all the way to the back door on the passenger side, the bus appeared to have some damage on that rear corner but not extensive.
In the video, the impact happens at about :36 on the timer. If you notice when you pause it, the whole side of the car is demolished.
One thing is that we have real front and rear bumpers on our Prevosts. Our previous Monaco did not although it appeared to have a bulge in the bumper area front and back. Looking inside with the front generator slide tray open, there were just brackets to keep the fiberglass in place, no real protection.
I certainly do feel safer in the Prevost. I do keep my speed down (around 60 mph) as with any large heavy vehicle, it just makes sense not to be the fastest on the road.

I don’t have a 2015 Prevost like Mark but the reason I bought my old 1991 Prevost because it looked like a new one and was Cool and Tough!
-
I agree Glen they are very safe to drive and in the event of a accident u will be safer than sticks and staples
-
We never thought of crash worthiness when we bought our first Prevost, but once we started to travel in it we saw a number of accidents involving conventional RVs. If anyone has seen how a conventional RV comes apart in an accident it becomes evident the occupants have very little crash protection.
We are not bullet proof, but our coaches are unlikely to be scattering parts of the structure along the path the RV travels after a collision.

Who gives a RAT”S ASS about the darn bus!! I don’t think we need to post stuff like this!! It seems like we care more about the stupid bus then we do for the people in the car.

Sid,
I
was only pointing out the extent of damage to the bus as opposed to
what a fiberglass coach would have had.I
certainly didn’t intend to take away the tragedy for the family. If
it’s offensive to you, I’ll delete. -
Sid you are absolutely correct, however this video is very instructional. I came away from viewing that video sick to my stomach thinking about how quickly things change. The family of the people in the car suffered a tragic loss in an instant. The people in the car were gone possibly due to a moment’s inattention. We all need to really think about doing those things that take our attention away from our driving, whether it is a cell phone or messing with the GPS or worse, watching TV.
What I also saw was how casual the policeman walked to his car, head down with no regard for the passing traffic. A few seconds one way or another literally meant the difference between life and death for him.
As a bus owner that video gave me a very clear picture of why I am to never try to use the shoulder of the road because of the danger of doing so. At the very least I need to get to an on ramp or better yet a rest area if I need ot stop. And for certain to never allow my family to be outside the coach if we do have to pull onto the shoulder.

I
think the point of this particular thread is that the loss of life or injury
would or could have been even worse in this instance without the structural
strength and isolation afforded by the Prevost, contrasted with most other
motorhomes or trailers. All are of course heart-broken over the loss of
life caused by this accident. Godspeed the individual who lost his or her life.
