Power Tech 17.5 no start
Used the gen for 3 days dry camping and then for 3 hours driving to Lake George. Ran great and powered both AC. When I went to go home the gen would not start, it makes a noise like clunk clunk, not a smooth sound like it is just trying to start. I thought maybe there was a problem with the 1/4 tank of fuel and was preventing it from starting so I stopped for fuel and put in 50 gals, still no start. One problem I did have the day before was that when I put it on auto start it tried to start even though I was connected to 50 amp. I wanted to leave the bus with the AC on and in case the power went out the auto start would kick in. If anyone suggests a battery problem, where is the battery located. Until I started reading the posts about gen problems I thought the coach batteries were used to start the gen. I checked the oil and it is full and the anti freeze level is just above the low line. Any suggestions very much appreciated.

Hi Bill, I have the same Power Tech genset in my bus. If you
did deplete the gen of fuel you will have to re-prime it to get it started.
Both fuel filters will have to be refilled (topped off with fuel). I can’t
speak to the auto start issue because mine is a Watchdog by Liberty and I never
use it anyway. I’m running my generator everyday so the house batteries and gen
battery are always charged up. Try calling call Power Tech in Florida at 352-365-2777 they
should be able to help.Fred

My 2002 CC has it’s own start battery and is located in the right rear of the generator bay . I had what sounds like the same experience and the battery wasn’t holding a charge. Truk fixed me up with a new Lifeline and all was well. My generator will shut down or fail to restart if low on oil , coolant, or fuel. I do agree that if fuel was the problem you may have to prime the fuel pump. PowerTech has their manuals on line and they contain a good troubleshooting guide. Good luck. -

According to my operators manual the generator will autostart if either the house batteries or the generator battery voltage drops to 10.8 volts. Given that your generator tries but wont start when you push the start button, and tried to start but wouldn’t when autostart was selected, I would bet on there being a problem with the generator battery. Mine is located in the generator compartment in a black plastic battery box. I would connect it to a good battery with jumper cables and give try and/or try the “Battery Boost” option.

bill. Your generator battery is located in the center of the coach 2nd bay drivers side. Remove the inner access panel to access
you should see a black plastic battery case. Also this compartment contains the filter for drawing in fresh air supply for the generator. Bleed out the air in the fuel line to the generator and then try to start it.

Thanks Roger I did change the filter in that bay floor that sucks up the air from underneath. I will check for the battery tomorrow. Hope all is well Bill

Thanks to several suggestions and Roger’s help in finding the battery I now have a fully operating Gen. The problem was a battery with a date of 2/07. It was also leaking into the case. One other question, how do I check the auto-start feature?
