Power Steering fail
Posted by Rodger on September 8, 2013 at 11:18 amAnyone able to confirm if my Vickers Power Steering Pump has an adjustment for high/low pressure on the bypass valve? We have blown a seal and awaiting parts overnighted from Prevost to arr on Monday. In fairgrounds here in Ohio so we are parked ok.

not much adjustment there. You can shim a little. Did you just blow the o-ring. ? parts house piece. Little hard to get too but sure makes a mess. Most shops stick you for a new pump for the cheap o-ring. It happen to me on the 89 and a fellow busnut was arround and told me about the o-ring or said I can get you a new pump. If it is the o-ring it will be comming out curb side above starter toward front of coach… pull retaining pin –then plunger ,put new oring on,install, fill fluid –go. Bob
Total cost $1 o-ring $12-fluid

What he says is right. Mine went out in the parking lot at the Ft Myers airport and by the time the DD tech came out, diagnosed that I needed a new pump, ordered it overnight from Prevost in Jacksonville and installed it, I had spent 3 days in a parking lot, got charged over a grand and all for a $1 o-ring.
Fortunately, I kept the old pump, did an autopsy and replaced the o-ring and now have a spare which I will probably never need.
When it went it sure did make a mess of the engine compartment!

Thanks, Robert & Chuck…I should have included on my original post that 2 yrs ago, I had a “leaking seal” replaced on this pump. About 2 hrs later (enroute home at night) I had a power steering failure and found out that the mechanic had replaced the steel retaining pin with an aluminum cotter pin! While making a tight maneuver move at a fuel stop was when the pressure built and blew! Nearly got the fuel pumps! Long story , we are at a County Fairgrounds visiting family and while moving the bus into position had to do a couple “K” turns and went from steering stop to stop rather quickly and I believe that is what my problem was. I overnighted seals/pins etc for overnight from Prevost on Fri, hoping to get it today….will let you all know, but expecting it to do the job. Caution will be taken on my part, as I now will take this into mind when manueuvering in the future, allow for pressure surging. I know the valve should allow for bypass, so , I will do it but a bit more gently.

o-ring failure can be cause by surging when you hold steering hard turn/lock —if you feel surging in wheel back off=you are causing that plunger (by pass )to rapidly move in and out. It is hammering against the piece with the o-ring on it. Also a dirty filter in your power steering resivoil will starve the supply side of the pump causing it to cavitate causing a simular situation. FWIW Bob

Rodger,
You don’t mention which Fairgrounds but if you are near Columbus you might try Power Steering Specialists at 690 Green Crest Drive in Westerville Ohio 614-882-2422 or 800-235-3076.

Thanx everyone for the input. Finally found a local “Mech” after much ado with phones and Coach-Net. Everyone seemed to want to tow me to their place of business. No way for this one. Coach-Net came through for the service call as planned and mech showed up, 30mins later not only the project is complete but cleaned, pressure checked and all is good. Yes, I had him do the whole change, spring, piston and o’rings. Old o’ring was actually broken from the hammering of the valve and spring. Also changed the filter while at it. I’m just getting a little to fat and brittle to get into this position to do this job. Well worth my ERS to Coach-Net also.
