  • power steering cylnder leak

Posted by michael on March 22, 2014 at 2:38 pm

Just started a pretrip inspection and noticed about a pint of what appeared to be trans fliud under the right side of the steering axle. Jacked up the coach and found the fluid is coming from the power steering cylinder at the rubber boot on the shaft. It has never leaked before and does not appear to have been leaking prior to parking in the barn. Has anyone experienced this problem? I assume the cylinder is rebuildable since the parts manual lists a REPAIR KIT/steering cylinder but does not show a breakdown. It also lists a part number for the cylinder assy. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

On a 1996 prevost it has one , prevost had service bulletin on it . It was stated that they said it was not needed and could be removed and capped off at steering bay and remove hoses , or rebuild it or new one they say it will not drive any different with it on or off your choice , I think about 17000 for complete one or just cylinder no tie road ends 7500 , not sure on rebuild kit call prevost Nashville ask them yours maybe different than mine. Mine has a SFA

    Peter,

Thanks for the info. I spoke with the service manager at Prevost Ft Worth and he confirmed the service bulletin. He stated they had removed several of them with no complaints. He suggested leaving the mounting brackets in place if I ever wanted to reinstall it as they are no longer available. The cylinders and repair kits are still available.

This is confusing to me regarding what is being discussed.

I’m guessing it is what I have always called a “shimmy dampener” which is like a shock absorber intended to minimize or eliminate steer axle shimmy. I say this because I cannot imagine capping the lines on the power steering cylinder.

I got it and looked at it. When I look at a hydraulic cylinder with supply and return lines it seems to me that is going to do some work, like assist you with steering effort.

When I read the bulletin is says there is no difference with and without the cylinder. I guess when I see my 50 Ford without power steering and think of the effort to turn the wheel, I can only imagine how an axle with 8 tons sitting on it is going to turn.

    What am I missing?

Prevost says they have taken lots of them off you can not tell the difference between when its on or off

Never mind. I think I see that the power asssist for our steering takes place in the steering sector.
