  • Power door window operators

Posted by Archived on May 22, 2016 at 5:13 pm

My entry door power window operates intermittently. If I wish to make it go down it will after I press the button, but it will stop by itself even if the button remains pushed.

To raise the window it goes up an inc h or so after pressing and holding the button before it stops. If I release the button and wait a while, it will rise another short distance after i press the button. I can repeat this until it is fully closed, or open.

I have two questions. The first is does anyone have any ideas why this happens? I was thinking the feature that makes the window motor stop when it goes all the way up or down might have something to do with the current draw and the mechanism senses a highere current draw after a short period of operation and shuts it off. It takes time to col down or reset which might be why I can inch the window up or down. I presume that is non serviceable, but would like to know what is really going on and if there is a way to fix it.

Assuming the answer to the question above is there is no fix, has anyone replaced the “regulator” which the entire mechanism is called. It looks like a real PITA and I am looking for clues that will allow me to understand the procedure. I think the driver’s toll window shares the same regulator so at some point I will need to fix or replace that one also.

I was told the motors develope a “Dead” spot, I had a toll window to act the same way. If I waited a few minutes, it would always continue in either direction. It is not the regulator mechanism, but in the motor itself. Not an easy replacement on an H, but, Not as bad on an XL

Huh … every day on the PC Forum has a surprise waiting for us. I would have expected Jon to replace a problematic electric window motor with a more reliable, tried and true hand crank mechanism from a mid-60’s International Scout.

There shouldn’t even be a window in that door. But there is, and I want it to work if I ever have to get in that door if the outside handle fails. With it down I can reach in and use the inside handle in that case.

    Jon,

Just curious, can you operate the passenger door window from the driver’s side?

the same problem with the toll window. It started some time ago and a few times, I was afraid it would not close anymore, so I kind of stopped using it. PITA at a toll booth. The window in the passenger door works fine.

Since Jon is going to repair his window, I will await his report, so that I can follow his steps. Thank you in advance … 🙂

I can open the driver door which allows me to reach in and turn on the key, with the key on I can use a stick or something to reach across to the RH dash and press on the power window control for the entry door.

My driver side toll window developed the same problem. If I remember correctly the replacement motor from Prevost was just under $200. I did the replacement in their campground in about 2 hours. The motor is held in place with two rivets that have to be drilled out and the kit comes with two smaller bolts to go in their place.

I’ve located the part at Rock Auto for around $260 and acording to Rock Auto the LH and RH are the same, just oriented differently.

I will verify that with Prevost today. If in fact the part is the same for both sides I am going to buy two and keep one as a spare.

Prevost confirmed the power window motor is the same for both sides. The Prevost number is 197925, currently costing almost $100. The part is a Cardone 82-144 available from a multitude of suppliers for substantially less, with Rock Auto seeming to have the least expensive at about $29 delivered.

If the window lift problem is the regulator the original has been replaced with a new design so if you need more than the motor you likely need to order from Prevost.

You are correct Jon with the PITA description. I have done the job on an H. Obviously the driver toll window. Someone told me it could be done by “feel” without much disassembly. BS. A considerable access problem for me involving removal of the driver chair just to effect removal of left dash panels without damage. Good luck.

It is one of the things I have lined up since the bus is in the garage until the end of August. The good news is I have no time schedule so if i get frustrated I can go do something else or just quit working on it for the day.

It should not have failed with so little use.

    Jon,

it’s been my experience seeing I have been in the glass business for over 30 years. And have change tons of window motors. That it is worse for the motors if you do not use them they get moisture in the armature and rust causing the motor to short out. When you get yours out pull it apart and check you will probably see what I’m talking about. Also make sure you install a new motor and not rebuilt one or you will be doing it all again very soon.
