Power awning windows
Posted by Archived on August 27, 2013 at 12:14 pmMy coach has 6 power operated awning windows, all operated by a stone age Phillips 3000 remote. Batteries are charged and all worked fine until recently. Now all have stopped working it seems at the same time. My coach is equipped with the Country Coach motherboard in the first bay. Does anyone know if the windows have a breaker/fuse somewhere or whether they run thru the CC motherboard. I am trying to run down the breaker/fuse issue to eliminate what seems to be the most logical explaination before moving on to the next. If the breaker is not the issue, how do you tell if a remote is functioning other than verifying power? It no longer controls any other equipment because of updates to the coach so I can’t check by using another function. Any help will be appreciated.

I’m trying to figure out if you are really taking about awnings. 6 would seem too many. If you are referring to silent glass shades, the control board is likely in the upper storage area above the windshield. On my XL it’s behind the TV. If it’s awnings, which I would hope have a manual switch in addition to a remote, I’d try the manual switches. Generally speaking, almost everything controlled by the rectangular push button switches runs through the ECC. ECC fuses are located on the bottom horizontal run of the ECC with a few on the circuit boards.

Gil, it sounds like George is referring to the Prevost side awning windows. It further sounds as though instead of a switch at each window he has the means to operate them via a remote.
George, take the following with a grain of salt. First, look for a switch that controls the windows along side each window. Even if you have a remote it is likely there is a switch also. If so, see if the switch will operate its respective window.
Since all have quit, and the remote will not operate any of them the next thing to do is see what is common to all six. Is there a relay or circuit breaker or fuse in your coach specifically for the windows? The easiest place to look is on the listing of relays and breakers on the side door at the front electric panel or on the rear door for the rear electric panel.
That’s the total of a Liberty owner’s guess as to what might be broke on a CC.

Gil,
Sorry for the bad description. I am talking about the actual windows on each side of the coach. My front ones are over the couches, one over the galley, one over the dinnette and one on each side of the bedroom for a total of 6. All were controlled by the Phillips remote. Now none will open by remote. I have checked everywhere I am aware of and all other systems seem to have power (lights, sockets, etc). It sounds like the next stop needs to be the ECC. Can the fuses there be reset or do they require replacement ? Is there any published materials or articles dealing with the ECC you are aware of ? Thanks for your CC expertise.
I will also check out the fuse suggestion.
I haven’t noticed a switch but that makes sense. I will get out the reading glasses and look closer.

George,
I don’t have the system you have. I don’t think you are going to find the controls in the ECC. All remotes work through signalling a receiver that’s either infared or radio frequency. If IR you should see the receivers. They may be surface mounted small lens that look similar to a peep hole for a front door. They will be directly connected to individual controllers for each device or wired to a common controller. Unless the remote is not working you either have a common controller or all windows share a common fuse or breaker. I suggest you first rule out the remote. Program it to operate something else to see if it works. If that’s too difficult, see were the IR receiver wires are running to find the controller. BTW, I’m assuming the remote is not RF. If it is you probably won’t find the receiving antenna out in the open.
I am obviously shooting from the hip. Yes, there is some information that was supplied with the coach by CC for their systems. It’s not in depth but often sufficient. Hopefully, someone with the same system will chime in.

On my 99, anything going through the ECC from CC would have one of the square SunMullion swithces like all your other equipment, water pump, interior lighting, step slide and etc.
Usually anything with it’s own remote works the divice directly and is not tied to the ECC, window blinds, Bose system etc.
But the question about fuses on the cards in the ECC cabinet, there are several fuses on each card and the number of fuses is equal to the number of functions each card does.
For instance, if you have CC OTR air there qill be two fuses on the card that controls the OTR a/c. There are three sizes, 71/2 amp, 10 amp and 20 amp.
Your windows should be fused or have a circuit breaker some where.

George,
Remember, I’m a LIberty owner… I lost power to all my 12v rear window shades (I know your talking about the XLII awning windows, but the problem could be the same) and the remote or panel wouldn’t work. Found a tripped GFCI that provided AC power to the contoller and all was well.
Just a thought if maybe your controller lost it’s power.
-
The GFCI plugs in my coach I took out.
I got tired of chaseing problems only to find out the circuit was in series with one of the GFCI plugs in the coach.
These plugs wired in series provide power to all the plugs on the same circuit down stream.
I don’t see a big loss in safety due to their removeal. (I hope)

For anyone not familiar, during the early to mid 2000’s, Prevost XL2 shells had manual awning-style windows, but most converters took the handles off and concealed an electric window motor add-on kit in the window column to make the windows “power-operated”. I didn’t realize Country Coach had added a remote control setup on some of their coaches, so you are definitely looking for a Country Coach setup, nothing to do with Prevost or the chassis electrical system.
The other suggestions people gave here are all good starts and possible problems sources. First thing is finding the receiver/control boards. If they utilized someone like Somfy (like many did to control the motorized window shades in the 2000’s), they there is an individual glass fuse on each 5 or 10-channel control board.
Here is the link to the Pronto Owners Manual for the remote, but it will have no information on the specific setup program CC downloaded into it, however, that file is extractable “from” the remote if you have the specific Pronto NG programming software, obtainable from remotecentral.com

I think is was 2005 year shells, Prevost changed vendor and design of awning window with the motor and mechanism in the window, power in and out, relieving the burdon of motorizing the windows from the converters.

My 2002 has what Country Coach refers to as the ECC board in the first bay. I have verified all fuses ( in the board they are all the automotive blade type ) are good? Are the receiver/control boards you refer to a part of the remote receiver ? On my coach this is located in the front dash wall. I haven’t been in behind the “eye” yet but that is on my to do list. Your explanation of the windows was very helpful and I believe spot on. Wish those cranks were still there. I have learned from CC the power is thru what they refer to as the 12 volt LON distribution box. Problem being no one still there knows what LON stands for or where it is located. The Tech at CC I have spoken to is being very helpful but is hampered because of the volume of materials destroyed by the bankruptcy trustee and a lack of good organization with the documents the current CC has recovered. The pronto seems in order and is charged. Thanks again for your insight and explanations, they are very helpful.

Ben,
Do I understand that my 01 Liberty had manual windows when it arrived at Liberty and the electric windows were then installed by Liberty? If so, can the windows be changed back to manual without creating the wheel?
-
Aw, c’mon Truk…. are you sayin’ a Liberty would be acceptable with MANUAL windows???
Say it isn’t so!!
-
Tom,
They “could be” if the parts that were taken off, mainly the crank handles, were around. Prevost got “sideways” with the old vendor and NO repair or replacement parts to the original windows are available now.

Fixed and Repaired,
First thanks to everyone for their suggestions. In my best attempt to emulate the folks on this forum I set about to find and fix this problem. Well after hours of searching which was very educational and I did verify a lot of things were not broken, I never found the problem. Wife wanted working windows for Branson so I asked the head tech at Luxury Coach Services to take a look. Instantly he knew the answer. Gil was closest to correct by the way. It seems CC of my era had an IR connection in the back wall behind the interior panels ( closet in my coach) which was poorly made and not secured. ” Dangling” was the description I was given. This was his 4th or 5th repair for the same issue and was a quick fix for him to reconnect and secure. My mechanical pride diminished but wife happy. Oh well.

You are proving what we all learn after some time of ownership. None of us will ever know all we need to know about our coaches, but the best thing we can do is know all the people we can rely on because among them we are likely to find the answer.
