Post on additive for water tank sanitation
Someone posted a additive for sanitation of storage tank. Searched various terms and cant find.
Think it was Purogene any help will be appreciated.

These are what Olympia Luxury Motorcoach used on ours.
Filled water tank twice and ran washer, dishwasher, shower and all three sinks to flush out system.
Other box was for holding tank.

1/4 cup of bleach per 16 gallons of water will work just fine. Pump it through all the systems and let it sit for 12 hours. Drive the bus to slosh the water around in the holding tank as well to avoid having to fully fill and then fully drain.
Others use Hydrogen Peroxide for less smell and easier flushing but I am not sure of the ratio.

Bill’s bleach method has always worked well for us being available everywhere and much cheaper than Purogene. Purogene is used by airlines and if the bleach smell for the brief time it’s there is offensive the Purogene is odorless. I like the bleach smell so I can check all the outlets and know it has done it’s job.The best use of Purogene is as an additive to the water when you fill your tank. 1 oz. per 30 gallons if I remember correctly. The RV Filter Store used to have a video on Purogene if it’s still on their site.

We use our coach periodically, so it usually sits for a few weeks between uses.
A day before using the coach I dump the fresh water tank and refill. Then add a cup of 32% Hydrogen Peroxide to the tank and run the faucets/shower. I don’t remove any filters including carbon. Our ice maker is always off as we don’t use it.
However we don’t drink the water. We use a Berkey water filter for all drinking water. Very happy with it.

Two silly newbie questions:
1. How frequently should the fresh water tank be sanitized?
2. How do you actually get an additive or bleach into the tank? I only know to use the hose to fill the tank from a faucet and pouring bleach into an empty garden hose doesn’t seem very efficient.

You are correct. Filling a LONG water hose up with the disinfectant is very, very inefficient and for me involved the use of a ladder. I wonder if there isn’t an RV tank disinfectant pump out there somewhere.

Robert, I try for once a year, usually doing it near the end of August before we resume our travels. I tape the date when performed inside the door to the plumbing and water pump. At the same time I replace the house water filters with charcoal filters.

Hi Robert,
Austin removed the red plug (up top on the right bulkhead by the 160 gallon water tank), used a bending long-necked funnel and poured the sanitizer bottles into a full tank. Then, turned on all sinks, shower, ran washer and dishwasher until the tank drained. Refilled the tank with fresh water and rinsed through everything, again.
The water came out crystal clear. He left all the existing water filters in place…and, then changed all to new afterwards.

If you have inline water filters between the outside faucet and your holding tank you just need to remove the filter, fill the cartridge with bleach and reinstall. Fill as much water as you like and you have a fully charged tank.
I am full time so the city water connection keeps my tanks sanitized at all times!
However, I just bought this coach and did sanitize the tank and water lines at that time.

Thanks for the data points, everyone. Dick, I have a 14ft step ladder so I’m ready…haha! Greg/Deb…gotcha…I see that plug, so I’ll use that. I believe that all our filters are after the tank, so that should do it.
