Wow. That is so darn beautiful.
I’m saving a list of all the go to places when I finally do the full country trip. Currently, I’m keeping a link to each of these PC threads to remind me of where I want to go. I’m hoping that these thread links will be valid for years to come.

I am heading to Moab in October for a week of extreme off roading. I called Portal to inquire about staying on the Resort side of the campground given my 11 year-old bus and the fact that I wanted a space where I wouldn’t have to unhook my trailer. I offered to send a picture, which I did. They quickly replied with an email that I was fine to reserve in the resort side. It took a couple of minutes and they were as nice as could be expected. I am not a fan of the 10-year rule but recognize it is their campground and they get to make the rules. 10 year rule only applies to the Resort side of Portal. If I owned a resort I would probably institute a rose petal smell rule so the place didn’t get too stinky from the Liberty black water tanks (I know someone will correct me. It is a combo tank).

This is the best trail guide book I have found for Jeeping. I also have a couple for Colorado (one stays in the bus). Let me know if you need some help finding the change your shorts trails.

Question about Moab off roading:
We tow a stock 2011 Ram 4×4 Crew Cab (M&S tires). Are there any easy/moderate trails for our truck or are most trails best traveled in a smaller “jeep”?

I went off roading the other day in the Hummer. I was trying to make a very tight turn and when it was apparent I wasn’t going to make it, I actually drove over the curb rather than backing up.
Whew…….that was exciting.
Moab sounds a little out of my league.

We’ve been on moderate trails and saw 4X4 pickups on each.
Loc is an off road professional, you can’t hang with that big dog.
You guys will be good in the fall, the skeeters are so bad here I’m glad to be leaving tomorrow. The spraying still hasn’t happened, impossible to spend anytime outside, they actually like Off. Once you’re away from places with tree’s and landscaping your good.

There are a number of trails that you can easily do in a 2-wheel drive vehicle. A number of years back we saw a guy in a Crown Victoria on Hells Revenge (one of the “difficult” trails). Many of the trails are rated “difficult” because of a few obstacles. Many of the obstacles have bypasses. In a four wheel drive Ram you could do most of the moderate trails as well.

Thanks guys. We are looking forward to our September – October trip. We did some off-roading in our TJ Jeep back when we lived in Las Vegas and know that being in the Moab area and not going off road would be a shame.
I’ll definitely stay on easy and moderate trails.
Appreciate the advice.

We used to do Summers in Leadville ,Co. and the “skeeters” were as you describe until July 4th, then they disappeared. wonder if it is the same there?

According to the locals this is very rare and a really wet spring has caused the problem.

It rained every day when I was there the first week of May. I thought the Colorado was about to come out of the bank then.
Lake Powell has risen 40 ft since the end of April and still rising. It typically peaks in the middle of July. The normal spring fill is more like 30 ft. It was a wet winter out west for change.
