The pipes are likely to have a clear lacquer or polyester finish on them after polishing. But if the clear coat has a break in it such as a scratch or an area where the finish failed the copper will corrode and the corrosion can spread beneath the clear protective coating.

So the real solution is to stip the coating, repolish the pipes and either clear coat it again, or be doomed to a life of polishing copper sewer pipes.

Thank goodness this is a private conversation just between us because if the folks that are driving SOBs (some other brands) knew what we were saying about our Liberty copper plumbing they would be all over this.

I can say that Jon’s pipes are the best looking ones I have seen to date. I did an inspection when I was there. I don’t think he will do yours, but you may get some pointers on doing it yourself….

The last bus pipes were not clear coated. I used a lot of copper cleaner on those pipes. Now those pipes on the current bus are OK (some spots starting to show) but they are coated so I have a project ahead of me in the future.

I could switch to the more mundane plastic pipes but if we ever have another bling contest I wouldn’t have a chance. Chrome plating would work. Hmmmmmmmmm.

That’s a project where removal of the copper pipe assemblies is likely the way to go.

There are numerous paint stippers available and I have used the ones at Lowes successfully on a number of different substrates including plastic and aluminum. I suspect copper would be unaffected.

Once the coating is stripped than any good copper polish will do the job.

I wasn’t kidding about chrome plating. (Maybe a little) If you want a nice looking plumbing arrangement copper will chrome plate easily and a quality chrome plating will wipe clean with no need to use any chemicals other than maybe a little water.

When Larry spends his weekend removing and polishing copper piping I want to see photos.
