  • Planning on a front shade swap

Posted by Archived on May 17, 2017 at 1:52 pm

I was down at Liberty last week where I had my coach scheduled to swap the windshield shades along with the two adjacent shades from a white material (the previous owner had put on) back to the factory black ones. They had tried to talk me out of it before b/c of the heat but Ive never liked the way the white looked. The coach was all ready for the new shades until they found out they were cut about 5 inches too short and were not going to go all the way down.

Long story short, I am not a Liberty anymore and they have sent me the correct lengh in black but I’m on the hook now to swap them. It looks as if there are a couple things to remove to access the motors but doable for sure. I just wanted to reach out and see if there were any tips or tricks anyone could offer before I do this. Is there anything to watch out for or something somebody has done and would do different?

Im hoping to just remove, replace, & repeat!

    Thanks.

You have no idea how bad your decision is to go with black shades.

It sounds like even Liberty is recognizing the use of black shades was a very very bad choice.

If you are facing the sun when parked and with the shades down to try to keep cool the front 6 or more feet of the coach will feel extremely hot even with the front Cruiseair running continuously. I would not accept our current Liberty without the shades being changed to a light color because the previous Liberty with the black shades was impossible to cool with the black shades in front.

I hope you like the heat as it will add to the heat…

You must take the blind down, remove the surround and pillar area, once the blind is out verify one at a time which way the seam is in the area at the bottom, unroll, remove..You must clean up the roller, use new adhesive tape and get the new material on straight and centered….

Thanks for the pointers Jeff. I will most likely know more about those front shade than I ever cared to when Im done!

In the way of the heat, I have taken some preventive measures to limit the heat when the shades are up and Im driving down the road. I had my windshield tinted from the top down to just about the top of the windshield wipers with 1% tint. I can clearly see out of it and it just about makes driving directly into the sun no problem even without the sun shad down. The other half of the windshield was tinted with the new infrared tint which is a clear tint but blocks out 30% of the radiation. The two adjacent windows are tinted as well. With that, I honestly have no problems with the sun or heat coming through and making the front of the coach uncomfortable.

A friend of mine has a non slide Liberty very similar to mine with the original black shades. Having the same HVAC systems as a double and triple slide coach, the non slide has a rather serious heating/cooling system. He has not had any problem with the heat.

    No turning back now!

I just had Jeff replace mine with white on the outside and black on the inside and it makes a HUGE difference in keeping the coach cool while parked.

I would rather be comfortable than worry about the look. You can’t see it when you are in the coach anyway..(g)!
