PC – Know Your Prevost Seminar I – Question
Posted by Michael on July 31, 2015 at 10:49 pmJon;
During the seminar you told us to have a few spare sensors. Which sensors were you talking about?

I carry a coolant level sensor, oil temp sensor, water temp sensor and oil pressure sensor.
They take up very little space and if I am shut down during a weekend due to a failed sensor I don’t have to wait until Monday.

Jon
A set of belts would also be a good thing, you never know when a belt let go and you are on side of the road. -
Jon,
Just add a crank positon and cam position sensor to your collection and I think that covers all the sensors that could stop your engine.

Good suggestion Ken.
I carry them because if I am broke down on Friday night it will be Monday before the Detroit Diesel sensor store opens, and then with my luck they will have none in stock.
-
It’s a good thing to have spare sensors, all of them probably don’t
add up to the cost of one fill up. Most of the sensors are not too
difficult to replace, access to the crank and cam position sensors can
be difficult depending on engine configuration.Ken

Could somebody post the part numbers and maybe relative cost of the suggested sensors to carry as spares that are needed on a 1998 vintage Detroit 60 engine ? Thank you.

23515251 Coolant Temp. sensor
23518092 Air, fuel, oil temp. sensor
23532797 Oil pressure sensor.

I have to add the sensors Ken suggests. I don’t know the price of any. I have not included the coolant level because I can jumper between the pins on the connector to deal with a failed sensor.
-
You should purchase sensors based off your engine serial number. Some DDECII, III/IV, V, VI and X sensors won’t interchange. Those part numbers Jon gave are for DDEC V.

How about at the next Seminar you show the sensors and how to jump them? Perhaps Jeff could even have an assortment of them for purchase, along with any other emergency items.
-
This is my personal opinion so it is not the final word on how we will discuss sensors at the seminar.
I will not teach someone how to jump them. Maybe I am sensitive to some of the posts and emails that have recently been seen in which a buyer has been taken advantage of by a less than honest seller. I am not saying seminar attendees are going to jumper a bad sensor and then sell their coach with that temporary fix in place, but based on the subtle ways I am recently seeing sellers deceive buyers I would rather see owners replace defective sensors than by-pass them.
-
We can work on identifying the location of the sensors as part of the seminar.

I just did a Google search for Detroit Diesel Series 60 sensors. I got pages of listings, some with photos, some specifiying engine size, such as 14L. I also found a PDF file from Detroit Diesel that shows the locations of all sensors.
We may never need one, but the cost to have them is so cheap I don’t mind having them on hand, just in case.
