  • Patching Large Holes In The Roof

Posted by Rusty & Krissy on June 23, 2014 at 4:54 pm

Ok we have started working on the bus again! We have a 1981 prevost and someone installeld rooftop AC’s at one time. It is time to make them go away and install boat hatches for skylights. First step will be to patch the large holes in the roof.

What gauge of stainless steel do you think should be used to patch the large holes? The plan is to rivot new panels over holes in the roof.

What adhesive should I use in between the new steel panel and the bus roof? I was thinking about using Ice and Water Shield HT inbetween layers, then I would have to choose a sealant to seal around the panel and the tops of the rivots.

I know most of you have done this before, just wanted to hear what others have done.

    Thanks

    Rusty

I believe the roof is aluminum, and if so that is the material that will work best. I cannot tell you about the best sealants.

Take a look at this thread on the Eagles board. Since you have an older chassis like mine this could be something to consider.

I would make it lap over a roof ribs=to insure tight fit on both length ways and cross ways. Silaflex or silicon (GE clear) would be my choice of sealant. Alum to alum both matching edges ruffed up before install. You will need 7/16 or 1/2 long pop rivets=3/16 size. Make sure to seal tops or rivets with caps or selant. Use 4 screws to hold it in place until you get your rivets set them remove them and put rivet in holes also. Referance to GE silicon=I have found the clear to have more holding power than tinted silicone. Bob
