I replaced our Amana in about 2015/2016 with a Kenmore. Ran on the original MSW (or so I thought they were) until I got new inverters from Jeff at the end of Decenber 2017 (one had failed, probably coulda gotten it fixed, but they were from 1999 … how long could they be expected to last?). The MSW inverters didn’t seem to bother the new refrigerator, although I got lots of warnings about using MSW inverters with new electronics from many different directions.

I kept the original Amana, its sitting in the race shop not running. Had occasion to go into it last week. That sure was a first class refrigerator, all the shelving, niches, etc. are first class compared to the Kenmore.

I was nosing around today by my regulator (that looks similar, and maybe the same as yours) and was wondering if it was a good idea to replace it. I’m rebuilding my battery storage area and will have pretty good access while I’m in there. The price is right, but how is the track record on newer models? Mine seems to be working okay.

Just to jump in here quickly; I finished this same upgrade two days ago – same regulator from same supplier (unaware that others were doing this!)…and it fixed a host of problems.

I’ve had fluctuating current on the 12v side of things in the house and multiple electronics were not happy. Specifically – the Red Dot Marathon OTR control boards wouldn’t work and were most unhappy.

Cleaned a ton of grounds, added a ground, checked tightness, and still dash lights pulsed bright/dim and the A/C controls were inoperative, with situation worst at idle.

I removed the voltage regulator and had it tested and the results said that it was fine….27.7 volts and all good to go. But still the flickering, unstable current after replacing.

Replaced the regulator with the new 990 one and bingo. Rock solid current and now everything works perfectly on the house side, including ‘Marathon’ OTR A/C.

The point of this posting other than to share: Here is a link to a file that I obtained from Prevost with their instructions for replacing the original 111847 with the newer 10503805. It was most helpful and I wanted to share for anyone else perhaps considering the same upgrade. In the end, I figure 25 years for a voltage regulator is a pretty good lifespan 🙂

John: Did you replace the capacitor as well? Any idea what the capacitor does? Does the voltage coming out of the voltage regular need to be “adjusted”? or is it OK as it comes from the vendor?

The settings for the alternator regulator that I have seen in various Prevost service manuals is 27.7 volts.

I would strongly suggest not changing that.

Hey guys –

1. It is my understanding that the capacitor is needed only for replacements different than mine/ours. The second page of the Prevost instructions are for replacement of a 4-wire regulator with a 5-wire (the new one). Mine/ours is a 3-wire to 5-wire, so I went with page 1 after speaking with Prevost. I did not add a capacitor.

2. I did lower the setting on the new voltage regulator to have 27.7v output. The ‘stock’ setting per the manufacturer of the new regulator is 28.3v, and that is what the system showed immediately after installing straight out of the box. Using a digital voltmeter, I adjusted the voltage regulator down to 27.7 and all of the other numbers fell in line with Prevost specs (as Mr. Wehrenberg notes).
