  • OTR WORKING AGAIN

Posted by gary on August 22, 2012 at 7:41 pm

Well I just got back from Goodletsville, seems the problem was twofold on the OTR, First a relay was bad second a solinoid valve had to be replaced. Onthe slide sensoe issue it turned out to be a controller the one I had unplugged originally. The repairs took about 4hrs, parts I do not know they are sending me the bill “can’t wait” I do know the controler was 135.00. while there I had them wash the coach, 75.00 I was told. Now I drove 8hrs there first day in service the second day and drove 8hrs back the next day, spent 590.00 in fuel, the joy of ownership

Did the guys from Almost Chrome do the wash for you? I have used them with good results when there for service.

Mark, They did it with the help there in the wash bay Interesting thing happened right before we arrived, A 2012 XLII caught on fire at the facility. It was one with the volvo engine and the fire was in the area of the muffler DEF filter or particulate filter the fire department sprayed it down with a powder of some kind? These units with the urea burners get about 1300 degress I have been told? Damage seemed to be limited to the rear end area Gary

WOW! I know those things get hot, and there have been fires before. That is why I like my pre 2010 engine so much. No catalytic converter, no DPF and lastly no DEF.

I hope they have the bugs out before we need a new coach because by then, there will be no choice but to get that stuff or even more…

The very reason I got rid of my 08 Beaver was it’s 2007+ CAT engine. DEF is not necessary to reach those temperatures; they are reached when the DPF goes through a burnoff. DPFs are a very bad thing. It’s too bad the EPA is killing the over the road diesel engine industry. CAT and Detroit have both exited the market and Navistar’s EGR based engines don’t appear to be meeting the EPAs requirements.

“CAT and Detroit have both exited the market and Navistar’s EGR based engines don’t appear to be meeting the EPAs requirements”

Navistar was, or still is, involved with the EPA in litigation about the Maxxforce engine they are using. Some of the other manufacturers sued the EPA / Navistar about credits that Navistar was using to be able to sell engines today. I don’t know where it will shake out, but Navistar will be in deep trouble if they have to redesign or switch to another engine to sell their trucks. I heard that the big deal to the other manufacturers was that the Maxxforce engine did not need or use DEF and that gave International a competitive edge. The service rep from Navistar told me horror stories about what drivers were putting in that DEF tank when they didn’t have DEF to put in it… Use your imagination on that one. He said that owners of the Maxxforce were so lucky they didn’t have to deal with that one.

We used to be 100% Cat in all our trucks, and Cat’s engines were less than stellar the last few years we had them. We spent way too much money keeping them running., so I can see why one would get rid of that problem.
