OTR condensor fan not running … any ideas?
Posted by Mike on July 6, 2015 at 7:16 pmHello guys and gals, Today for the first time I turned on the OTR ac. Evaporator fan comes on but not the condensor fan. Freon level is low but surely that does not affect the condensor fan from blowing. Checked reset breakers in battery bay .. all ok. Checked breakers in front breaker panel all OK. Not sure if any are in battery box. Any ideas? Thanks in advance! MT

.should be set of breakers in there. Condenser swings out when you open door — look upper right

If I recall the condenser fans got power through a relay that looks like the solenoid for the starter that was on the firewall of old cars. Check that. Additionally if you are getting power to the motor check the brushes. they are a wear item.

thanks Jon and Bob! Did a voltage check and the relay was bad! Ordered it from NAPA $410 will be in tomorrow. Will keep you posted! Thanks again!

Ok changed out relay still no condenser fan. I know fan works by connecting it to direct power it runs well. Took a voltage check across relay got 27.5 volts coming in but nothing going out. Also had 27.5 volts at both the smaller terminals. To me that seems like a lot of voltage to switch relay on! Any other ideas on where to check? Thanks! MT

ck relay ground and motor ground. If you have 27 volt supply(all good) and selonoid has power signal to activate why is it not delivering to motor? relay must be grounded to complete ciccuit.

You’re right Bob! Traced wires from solenoid to junction bar and from there I have no idea where they go! It has to be where it switches to connect power at relay!

Ok thinking this through! The evap relay is sitting beside the condenser relay. Evaporate fan runs when I turn on ac switch at the dash. Wondering if jumping condenser relay from evap relay will get condenser fan to come on when AC is switched on at the dash?

Mike You need freon in it to make head pressure to turn it on Darrell

Thanks for the tip Darrell, I had a sneaky feeling that might be a problem. But I got 20 psi on the suction side not sure about high side. I will have to check it. Should I put liquid in first at condensor? At what pressure do you think it will engage? Thanks!

Got 35 psi on suction side and 80 psi on high pressure side. Compressor clutch has now engaged but still no condenser fan. Almost as if it’s not pulling in any more freon.

Had everything going finally. Compressor clutch on, check, Condensor fan on, check, freon going in system, check, starting to feel cool air at driver and passenger area, check, WTH the compressor clutch disengages and the condensor fan shuts off. I swear this ac is worst than trying to please a woman. Oh well, I will wait till Monday and try and find the cause. Probably a breaker!

You have just enuff freon in it to tease it, put more and it will start running
