OTR Blower Motor Bearing Replacement
We had a terrible squeal coming out of the vent any time the OTR rose pedal dispenser (aka the blower motor) was turned on. Turning the squirrel cage by hand, you could hear a bearing growl. So we tackled that problem on Sunday. It went surprisingly smoothly.
I removed the entire motor/fan assembly, which is conveniently mounted on a frame. Then removed the fans by loosening the 5/16″ square-head set screws and unscrewing the fan housing from the frame.
On the left side of the motor, there’s an external snap ring that gets removed, then the 10mm bolts securing the flange to the motor housing, and finally the flange can be removed with a little persuasion. The armature can then be removed, making sure to keep track of the thrust washer that resides in the right side flange, just outboard of the right shaft bearing. The brushes will release, but we have a solution for this.
The bearings were ordered from Prevost. SKF 6205-2RSH
The left bearing is retained with a larger internal snap ring which was removed to replace the bearing. The right bearing is pressed onto the shaft and we removed it with a bearing separator and a shop press. The new one was installed, making sure to only press on the inner bearing race. The shaft was too long to rig up in the press, so we stood it upright on a piece of wood and used a hammer to tap it on.
The only real trick to reassembly was situating the thrust washer in the right flange and retaining the brushes while the armature was inserted. To do this, the right flange was removed by removing the 4 bolts and tapping through the motor housing from the other side with a long drift. Then we held the brushes back with zip ties until the armature could be inserted enough to hold the brushes out and then the ties were cut. Then we reassembled and reinstalled the blower unit. Rose pedals are now dispensed in complete peaceful silence. Just how we like it 🙂 Hope this helps someone down the road!
