  • OTR AC conversion

Posted by dick on July 7, 2015 at 6:59 pm

Currently my OTR is inoperative. Although it worked fine in Florida this winter, currently has no charge.

My question is has anyone converted to 134 with success? I have plenty of R12 to recharge after finding leak, but I’m thinking about just recharging with R134. I would change out compressor oil, and leave the rest alone. I’ve changed over numerous cars, and heavy equipment, and tractors by just changing oil and charging with the 134.

    Any thoughts or ideas?

    Thanks Dick Egler

    Dick,

A lot of folks have made trhe switch. Obviously the oils are not compatible so some effort is required to purge the R-12 oil and replace it with oil for a 134 system.

The change is not without some concerns. The first is making sure the system is tight. 134 will find a leak and escape faster than 12. Based on the age of your coach I would sure look hard at the seal on the compressor behind the clutch. If Prevost were to make the switch they would strongly recommend the replacement of hoses and the expansion valve. But others have made the switch without changing any parts so how deep you want to get into the switch is up to you.

The last thing to recognize is you are going to lose about 15% of the performance. That should be OK because the system does have a lot of capacity.

Dick, I am in that process right now. Drained oil, put new oil in compressor and pulled vacuum on system. Dealing with a condenser fan electrical issue right now but will keep you posted on outcome!
