Options for water heaters ?
The twin , stacked, 10 Gal Atwood electric Water heaters with heat exchangers setup will need to be changed.
The top unit does not come on, the bottom is old….
Any idea or advice to upgrade this setup ?
I can get 2 new 10 Gal water heaters but….is there a better way to go in that limited space ?
An Aquahot will not fit there…. Even an ITR Oasys is too big for either that location or where the Webasto is in the rear by the chassis batteries.
I have propane on board but no good way to exhaust the fumes from that compartment short of hacking the door and create something unsightly……
I can see where the twin and stacked 10 Gal setup made sense….much faster BTU recovery and the electric element in the 10 Gal is the same wattage as in the 20 Gal heater…so going with a 20 gal does not help get hot water faster.
Are there really any options for that vintage ?The grey cover to the left is the Propane Tank partition. The door only has bottom vents.

they should have coolant loop so webasto can heat water heaters go back in with the same thing

Jeff, what 10 gal heaters do you use these days ?
Can you still get the Atwood EHP-10 or have better alternatives ?

Marius, I couldn’t find EHP10’s you may have better luck, went with EHM11’s. They are the same dimension as the 10’s, the main difference is the engine coolant fittings are on the front instead of the back.

Did you check the reset buttons under the wiring cover to see if that top one may just be tripped? I had that happen once or twice with my last bus with the EHP-10’s in it. The reset is on one of the thermo switches under that cover.

Marius, the electrical side of water heaters you have are quite slow to recover so you will probably want to run the Webasto for hot water when you want a shower. We had to do so even when we were in a CG with 50 amp hookups. Get your Webasto going and you will be happy. Unless the current units are leaking, I would leave them alone.

We just did the entire change out of the EHP 10’s for new Kuuma 11 gallon tanks…
We changed the back heat exchanger unit connections to the front of each water heater and reinstalled the whole project… it took some time… but it is really done correctly… better than the original installation…
I also insulated the entire bay area, etc. …that’s because I am paranoid…
I apologize that the picture here is sideways but we cannot get it upright… tried five times…
The water heaters are 3 inches longer than the older units… they fit but the frame holding them had to be adjusted…
Call me at 713 725 9486 and I will give you the benefit of our experience.
We also checked the various valves, etc thatwork with and control the release of the coolant through the exchangers. The blue hoses are heat exchanger hoses and the green are sompli over flow protective hoses.

By the way… how do you rotate the pictures?? We are adept at this sort of thing but struck out…

Pres did a very nice job and it is definitely a way to go.
In his setup, access to the rear of the heaters to monitor heat exchangers connections is tough, on my coach , not so. I can put water heaters with rear heat exchagers loops with no problem., which makes the front less cluttered…..
The question now is…..which brand to choose…
Kuuma (Camco) makes the 11 gal water heater with both front and rear heat exchager, the Whale Seaward brand has 11 Gal in both rear or front HE configurations, aluminum, white epoxy or stainless cover, and Atwood makes the new EHM11-SM with only front heat exchanger ports…. no more EHP-10 with rear HE ports for some reason. I have a call into Atwood to find out why.
All these units can all be found in various places from 300-450 depending on outside cover and brand, some places offer free shipping, some not etc.
Any factual data that shows one brand is better than the other with these new products ? Any one in particular to stay away from because of problems ?
Reviews on the net are not helping much from what I could read and gather….so back to you Gurus
