  • old air bags

Posted by Rick & Denise on October 16, 2012 at 6:05 pm

Started replacing my air bags and brake chambers this past weekend. I got half way through and will finish next weekend. The air bags are dated 1995 so I presume they have never been replaced. Much to my surprise there is cracking in the rubber. With that in mind would they be worth anything or should they be chucked. Rick

    Rick,

Dump them… I cut one of mine open just to see what the inside looked like and other than the bump pad being banged up, they looked like new and they were 15 years old.

    Rick,

I kept a couple of my old ones and installed a shut off valve and air chuck, now I have a couple of air jacks that really work great.

Here is a couple of photos of the air jack. The only modification is to cut one of the mounting bolts off and grind it smooth as shown in the red circle.

Thanks Dale. Tom if you want some of my old air bags you are welcome to them. I can give them to you

when I see you in Fl. in Jan. or if you are will to pay for shipping I can send them now. I plan

on keeping 2 so the other 4 are available. If anyone else would like them just say so.

I am all done for now til next year. I just replaced air bags, brake chambers and shocks. Rick

I am ready to replace the air bags and from looking at this article it seems that some of you replace the entire assembly as opposed to just the bags. Is that what I need to do? I can see an advantage to having the complete assembly new, but is that more expensive to do? I would suspect that mine are 21 years old.

Tom Are you talking about replacing just the rubber part of the air bag? If so I don’t think you buy just that part.

    Tom,

They come complete, bolt on item. Prevost is the best price.

That sounds good. The reason I ask is the maintenance manual shows how to remove the rubber part from the assembly for replacement and the part is listed in my parts manual as well. Replacing the whole assembly sounds much easier.

    Tom,

Depending on your future plans for ownership you might want to consider refreshing your entire suspension system while you are at it. Over time as the components age they stop working as intended. The shocks lose effectiveness, the Norgren valves start to leak and the air bags either get rust leaks in the bottom “can” or they leak due to cracks that begin to form around the bottom where they flex and roll. In extreme cases an air bag just gives up and bursts like a tire blowout.

So if your coach ownership is intended to be long term you will get a lot of peace of mind replacing Norgren valves, maybe ride height valves and shocks while you are in there doing the air bags. If you average 1 1/2 hours per air bag add another hour to the labor and you can get everything else done also. Do that and you probably have at least 10 years of peace of mind.
