  • Oiling gears on Series 60?

Posted by Art on February 18, 2022 at 9:23 am

Almost done with auto tensioner kit,I Pulled off both of the round covers on front of engine to install newer oil fill and auto tensioner mounting plate. How are all the gears oiled up front in series 60? Is there lower gears in the pan oil the sit in the oil that pull oil up, or is it pumped up to top of gear housing and runs down? I also Im installing the oil vent kit on top of DN50 so I removed old fabric braided line from rear of gear housing and plugged it, The other braided fabric hose from rear of gear housing supplies oil to compressor and DN50 that tells me it’s pumped up??

Something I never thought about and many of us probably take for granted!

looking at drawings it looks like the oil comes from that fabric hose from top of motor to tee at rear of compressor then from tee at compressor to stainless braided line to rear of 50DN oils rear then small brass solid tubing to front of 50DN oils front bearing, then 1 inch oil line at the bottom of 50DN then oil returns to oil pan, then vents at the top of 50DN to front of gear box next to auto tenisioner.

Section 3 Lubrication System in Detroit Service manual:

On engines equipped with an air compressor, a flexible, external oil line runs from a threaded hole at the top, front corner of the left side of the cylinder block, which is tapped into the main oil gallery. The flexible line runs to a fitting at the air compressor assembly.?

Oil drains from the air compressor through a hole in the air compressor drive housing into the gear case.?

Note: On early Series 60 engines equipped with an air compressor, there was a “T” fitting in the air compressor drive assembly. A flexible external oil line ran from the cylinder block to this “T” fitting and another line ran from the “T” fitting to the air compressor assembly.

A flexible, external oil line feeds oil from the oil filter adaptor housing pressure gallery to the turbocharger bearings and shaft. This oil is returned through an external line to the block near the block oil pan split line and then back to the oil pan
