  • Oil Pressure Gauge – The Dancing Needle

Posted by Archived on October 5, 2012 at 9:21 am

This may be a repeat, but the oil pressure gauge on my Royale jumps around like Jon in a sheep coral. I have replaced the sending unit in the engine compartment, checked every terminal and wire from the rear to the front including the guage. It starts the jumping after the engine warms up, prior to that, the needle is steady when cold.

    Any ideas?

Dear Sheep herder…….please try to avoid using my name and sheep in the same sentence.

Regarding a jumpy oil pressure gauge I have experienced sudden movement on the needle on both my previous coaches. It was not unusual on either coach to have a reading of 40 PSI for example, and then have it jump to 50 PSI and after a while jump back to 40.

Since all my readings, despite the jumping around were within the specified range I never pursued any remedial action. I never compared the dash gauge with the rear gauge on either coach so I suspect needle movement was just limited to the dash gauge. FWIW when cold the pressure reading never jumped around.

The oil pressure needle on my coach dash has been doing the same thing for the last 2 years. The gage in the engine compartment seems to be steady. I have also been one of Ray Davis’s beta testers on his glass dash that plugs into the DDEC port and displays all readings on an IPad. The IPad readings are steady. Ive stopped worrying about it and now just keep my eyes peeled for Prevost owners stray sheep near Rallies.

There are oil pressure specs on the sending units. Your comment about rock solid cold leads me to believe that the sending unit might be the wrong spec. If you can check with the mfg of the sending unit they could advise you on another part number.

DD might have a recall on the original sending unit.

Back in parts business days sometimes parts are misboxed. Yep…it happens

So if you are determined to correct the shake the spec would need to be changed on the sending unit.

    Rodger.. good picture find
