  • Oil & Filter Change Intervals Etc

Posted by DON on November 8, 2019 at 4:37 pm

I recently posted our Prevost 3 used oil analysis results(see pic below) in the “Used OIl Analysis-Diesel” area of a forum called bobistheoilguy.com . I’ve been a member there since 2010. An expert there, Dnewton3, whom I’ve come to respect over the yrs, gave me his thoughts. Here is a link to the discussion:

The last oil/filter change I did to the Prevost was in Oct of 2018. At that time the oil and filters were 38 mths old with 9500 miles. IMO, and the experts, it/they still had a lot of life left. A BITOG forum expert thinks I could extend my OFCI out to 30k miles with UOA annually. I doubt I’ll ever take it past 15k miles.

Currently the oil load in the bus is conventional Mobil Delvac 1300 Super 15w40 w/4500 miles on it. My plan is to do another UOA in about a yr, Nov of 2020. The oil and filters will have roughly 10k miles then. If the report is good again, I’ll go another yr, Nov of 2021, to about 15k miles. Then I’ll send in another sample for analysis, await the results, then change the oil & filters.

According to DDC, if you don’t do used oil analysis(UOA), 15k miles is the max limit for non-EGR 60 series hwy engines. See section 5.4, Table 14 in the link below. They also say pre-2007 60 series hwy engines w/EGR can go 22.5k miles max.

I purchased 25 gals of the Mobil Delvac 1300 Super 15w40 on sale for $5/gal in 2018. It meets the DDC specs as described in DDC-SVC-BRO-0001 (dated 2018), p.19, section 5.4, titled “Oil Change Intervals for Pre 2007 60 series”. Also, check out section 4.6, titled “Used Oil Analysis” . It has a table with “warning limits”. Here is the link:

The DD 60s has a great reputation.

I’m sure you’ll be fine given the regular oil testing. We also do about 5k miles a year and I change the oil once a year when I lube the bus. Doing It costs me only $150 including filters. Not a big expense.

I have started going to two year intervals on some of my cars that I only drive a few hundred miles a year. It felt like all I was doing with the cars was changing oil. I think the main benefit is giving them a close inspection at regular intervals.

ThreeGreens: How do you capture all that waste oil when you drain?

I’ve been to two Joe Gibbs Racing Oil presentations that were put on Lake Speed, Jr. and one or two of JGRO chemists. Then usually mention “anti-corrosion additives” which are NOT usually in racing oil. They market a specially formulated Hot Rod Oil for … hot rods, collector and classic cars, etc. that tend to sit for periods of time. So if you have vehicles like that, you might want to reach out to Lake at JGRO and talk to him about their products.

Re “what to drain used oil into”: Yes, 10 gallons of diesel oil can get exciting quickly given the rate it comes out of the Detroit. I have one of those 15 gallon low profile wheeled oil drain containers with manual pump. I pump the used oil back into the containers and drop off at recycle center. Quick and no mess. Works well for differential and transmission oil change too.

Before that, I used a 30 gallon plastic concrete mixing pan about $30 from home depot. Now I use that for coolant changes.

In my pre-EPA cars, I run the same 15W-40 diesel oil because of the additional wear additives.
