OIL ANALYSIS
A member sent me an oil analysis on his coach and asked for an interpretation.
I cannot help because I have no benchmark that can be used for comparison so I suggested the company that did the analysis or Detroit Diesel might have a listing of normal ranges for elements in an oil analysis.
I think however if any of you have done oil analysis, especially those who do it routinely could post the results we would have a large data base from which anyone who is starting to do oil analysis can compare his results.
Please post the results of any oil analysis and PLEASE indicate if the engine is an 8V92, a Series 60 non-egr or a Series 60 EGR engine. I don’t know if any Volvo owners would benefit but we could add yours to the mix.

Here are Blackstone Labs “base numbers”
The top numbers are wear metals, etc.
The bottom numbers are oil properties.
These baseline numbers are for a DDEC V Series 60 engine with EGR only.

Do a search using the search word “OAI” and it will bring up my UOA post from late Aug 2015.
I’ve been doing UOA for years on many of our vehicles. I’ve used Blackstone and Oil Analyzers Inc-OAI. I’ve sent them the same sample to see what the results would be. The results were the same but OAI recommendation was more conservative so I stuck with them. Both labs have a lot of good info on their website. There’s also a forum dedicated to oil called “bob is the oil guy” where there’s a lot of good info.

Has anyone ever gotten a bad oil analysis? If so, tell us about it.

I did oil analysis on my planes until I had an engine go bad. The previous oil analysis was all within range and we pulled a lifter and found it was making metal off of the cam lobes. It was making a lot of metal in fact. I cut open oil filters from that point on and waved a magnet across them plus looked for metallic pieces in the pleated folds. Cheaper and instant results.

Yes, couple of bad tests as I recall. I believe one was fuel in the oil and one antifreeze, both on my 8V92. OOPS, forgot I just got another: 600+ ppm iron from the diff of my 2005 BMW Z4 track car.
