  • OEM muffler?

Posted by Dale on June 23, 2012 at 6:44 pm

I just ordered and received a OEM muffler form Prevost. I have always had a resonator on my bus but want to quiet it down, I’m getting rust through on my system now and need to replace everything.

Do any of you have a bus of my era that you could show some photos of the original mountings? or explain in detail how the original muffler is mounted. My muffler is oval and mounts with the widest part of the oval in a vertical position.

    Dale,

Roger Hang has your vintage and his is also a Country. If he doesn’t respond let me know and I will email him to answer the question.

Hey DaleJ…I will look at it tomarrow. I am about to replace mine and have talked with a couple mechanics at home that will do the Prevost thing for me, or they say they have a couple possible ideas using truck style mufflers ( I am like you, I would prefer to quiet it down if anything) but I have not decided yet. Should have probably done it when I did the radiator, but it was not “ready” to do at that time.

    Rodger,

When I talked to a professional at an exhaust supplier, he told me he didn’t have a muffler that would handle the exhaust of a 8v and that Prevost more then likely has them made specially for them. That is why I just ordered it from Prevost. FYI

That is close to what I had in mind, since there is 4 angle iron brackets welded in the location of the muffler. I will be making the metal bands to attach to the angle brackets.

Question; what material would work for the insulation between the bands and the muffler? Something that is 1″ wide by 1/16 or 1/8″ thick.

I’ll put this in the flea market. I wanted to let you know in this
    thread
that I have the muffler, tailpipe, mounting bands and the flexible part
of the connector pipe left over from my engine swap. Everything is in
    good
shape. I’d like to get about million dollars for all that, but I’m a
little negotiable. I have several other parts left over from the swap
and most all the bay doors for a 45 foot motor home chassis.

Header wrap tape good to 2000 degrees like

    header tape short roll

If you are going to fab up straps, make them wide enough to cover the wrap or, spiral wrap it to get the thickness that you need and secure the end with the locking ties ( part DEI 010202 )

Sawdust, thanks for the drawing, it made me think, WHAT DID I BUY THE PARTS MANUAL FOR MY BUS FOR? and for the exhaust tape idea, I’ll look for some.

Ken, I wished you had made that post two weeks ago when I was putting this project together, the items you have are all the things I need, but I don’t know if it would have worked, a million dollars is quite a bit 🙂

Well I got the bands made and was going to lift the muffler in place and use a floor jack to set it to finish the mounting brackets, WRONG! The muffler doesn’t fit between the welded in place mounting brackets.

So unless someone tells me the secret to this job, I’m going to cut the welds and make bolt on mounting brackets.

There is no way to take it in through the engine door, I would have to remove the fan/gear box and bracket.

And don’t tell me I should have done it when I replaced the radiator 🙂

Ice tea now… but Ultra later! 🙂

    Dale,

Something doesn’t jive. I replaced mine on my 87 and while I am fuzzy on the details (hence have not added to the discussion) I do remember I replaced it from the bottom as you are doing and there was nothing that prevented me from doing it. I do remember I replaced the pipe going into it at the same time and the hardest part of the entire job was getting the pipe(s) going into the muffler in place. I certainly did not have to cut off any brackets, or modify any.

DaleJ ……. sorry about the late reply. We are enroute home with some “Extras”, grandkids/Adult in bus and experiencing some “shoulda knowns” with AC cooling in this 105-108 temp in Kansas…..My muffler looks just like the schematic shown in the posting. That said, When (read if) we get home from Salina in the next day or so, I will get with my mech and show him. Sounds like you are going ahead with the project. He mentioned that he did not see any problem with the brackets, etc mentioning that he would use all new piping up to the turbo and that we would give that a close look at the same time. Good luck, sorry I got into this predicament, but, what the H, its all fun of some sort.

Jon, here are some photos of the project. You can see in the before that there is only almost 9″ of space between the brackets. That is why I had to bend them out to get the muffler in place. My plan is to use heat and bend them 90 degrees out, so I can get the muffler in and out more easy.

I don’t know if I have a factory setup now since I bought the bus used and it has always had a resonator in place.

Question for now, I was planning that the position of the bottom of the muffler be at a point equal to the bottom of the frame.

You are not putting in any kind of splash guard on that. You might want to coat your replacement with something like this………….

copy this to your browser – http://www.vhtpaint.com/products/flameproof/

    CERAMIC EXHAUST PAINT

    sawdust,

what should or shouldn’t I do? splash guard, is that the pan under the muffler?

I couldn’t get the link above to open, do you have a brand of paint? or part number?

That vintage coach did not have any splash pan or deflector. My muffler needed replacement due to corrosion from the inside and not due to a breakdown of the zinc galvanizing on the muffler The drain holes in the muffler were the origin of the corrosion.
