  • Numerous gremlins…then Battery Hi/Lo light

    My Battery Hi/Lo light situation is very similar to Blake’s recent thread; however, I’ve had some electrical gremlins which preceded yesterday’s telltale light. As a result, I thought I’d start a new thread to get some input as to whether anyone thinks there is any relation among the issues and/or some other problem that I’m not even considering.

    Background: In the last month, the following electrical issues have arisen: Backup camera (stopped working…screen says “Parking off”), Tank Sentry (blew fuse twice), 2020 installed Wingard OTA TV antenna (no power at control unit). I haven’t had time to really dig into any diagnostics on these, yet. My only attempt was replacing the fuse which blew, again, on the tank monitor. Oh, one other thing…my Transmission Control Module went bad and that (along with the retarder solenoid) were replaced in the same time period. On a positive note, the retarder works like never before…WOW!

    Latest: My Hi/Lo battery light came on just before we got home, yesterday. While driving, the dash gauge showed voltage in the 27/28 range…which is where it always sits. Once home, I shut down then (a bit later) restarted the engine to correct my level (in low idle) and the Hi/Lo light was on and the battery light (the one w/o anything written inside…aka “Primary Charge System Indicator” per the Liberty manual) started flashing. Today, I started the coach, put it into high idle after a few minutes, and I had the Hi/Lo but no flashing battery light. I then checked the voltage at the base of my Vanner EM70D, and it read 27.3V which is within the Hi/Lo specs, so voltage appears to be okay. I looked for a relay, but I didn’t see anything in the driver’s bay that referenced “blower” or fan clutch. FWIW, I have a Vanner 65-100 Equalizer which very well may be original.

    Should I be looking elsewhere to check a relay? Should I be shopping for a new Vanner EM70D? Or…might there be something else going on that may have caused all of these issues? (Or am I just star-crossed…even my Liberty key chain broke, yesterday…sigh.)

    Equalizers can fail, but not so often that it would make sense to replace one that is working.

    My guess is the monitor is the problem and I do not think they are really expensive.

    No clue about the other issues because they are house and chassis so I cannot even guess at what might be a common issue.

    Did you change your batteries or let them go dead lately?

    One little know fact about the Vanner Equalizers. When replaceing the batteries, disconnect the Ground first, and reconnect it last.

    If you have replaced the batteries, or they went dead, try disconnecting the ground for 60 sec, then reconnect it. – Also note you may have to drive the coach for up to 10 min before the HI/LO TTL goes out.

    You said you measured the voltage at 27.3 volts, but did you divide that number in half and check the 12 volt post? Your 12 volt post should show 13.6 +/- 0.5v. If it does not show very close to half, then your batteries are not equalized and your HI/LO TTL is on for that reason.

    The monitor will produce a hi/lo voltage light, but it will also produce a battery balance light if that is an issue.

    They are two separate unrelated problems with different warning lights.

    My Hi/Lo light issue is resolved. I confirmed ground lead continuity and measured 27.4V and 13.69V with engine running at 24V/12V inputs. I also measured with engine off, and values were good. I called a local seated coach operator and picked up a new Vanner monitor. Once installed, the dash light went off. The old monitor was corroded at the 24V pin.
