Not shifting
I drove about 9 miles, all was well used my jake to stop at a light, when the light turned green the bus would hardly move. looked at the shift indicator and it was stuck in “5”th. Pulled to the side turned the bus off and restarted it and it went into neutral but would not go into gear. The indicator was just blinking. I let her idle for a while and she finally went into gear like she always does. On the highway I noticed that my speedo needle was jumping, after a while that stopped. she operated well, we got to our destination with no problem (about 120 miles) on the interstate. A few stops, she shifted normally etc. But I didn’t use my Jake (toggle switch with “M” on it). Just looking for any ideas or things I should look for as I head home to NJ tomorrow. I’m thinkin its my Jake so I don’t plan to use it.

Did you check for codes? That may tell you something…also check the fluid level to make sure.

code 22 14 engine speed sensor. Oil level is good. What are the chances of getting home to NJ since she operated ok today.

I have no idea if it will make it that far. Maybe a call to Prevost PASS would get you more info…. I would imagine if it is having trouble with the engine RPM, it may decide to call it quits at some point to protect itself, but I don’t have enough Allison experience to know for sure.

The speed sensor can cause real problems, such as not going above 1st gear. The advice to call PASS is a good one. Where are you?

yes I meant trans fluid is good. I’m just outside of fort lauderdale at Aztec RV park for a meeting. Maybe I’ll call John in Jax to see if he has the part.

Made it home without a hint of a problem. So I decided to bypass Prevost Jax and make a run for it. My game plan is to have the transmission speed sensor changed out and have a trans service performed and change to transynd synthetic trans fluid. As a precaution, what other sensors would you change and your opinion on a changeover to the synthetic trans fluid. (I have 61k on my coach)

I
would think your vintage bus would already have Transynd, 50K is the
usual change interval. There’s no other sensor that I’m aware of, but
be sure to have someone such as Prevost or DD do the tranny, over
tightened filter bolts will cause some serious problems. They need to
follow the torque specs to the letter. -

Our bus numbers are very close, you should already have Transynd in it. Doesn’t hurt to check.
My sensor went out too but I got bucking instead of not shifting. Prevost will reprogram the new one, takes less than an hour. Don’t know for sure but other guys have said Detroit is priced alot higher to change it out than Prevost.

We just experienced this same code. However on my coach, the code didn’t flash. We had the coach towed into Albuquerque and had the tech run the code. Was flashing the same code, 22.
Fluid levels were good. Called Expert Transmission. He called me back immediately on a Saturday. Followed all his suggestions. Still had to be towed from Grant, NM. I could not get the coach to stop flashing “do not shift”. It is now at Stewart Stevensen shop waiting for Tuesday. We had to continue to Denver as my wife had appointments she could not miss.
You were lucky in that you were able to continue driving. Had no issues the day before. It ran great. Just had the ECU and the transmission module replace in Phoenix just the week before as the jake would not function. ECU was giving off codes. I replaced the ECU as I didn’t want to be stuck in the middle of no where. Still happened. Was hoping the issue was under warrenty from that job, but looks like something new. We just put the synthetic fluid in last year when a solenoid went bad in the transmission. How soon should we change the fluid? Good discussion on the fact that a lot of the old oil is still in the transmission.

This is one of our advertisers who does call outs down Houston, TX way. Would probably be worth a phone call to Lewis to see what advise he gives on the Allison Tranny.
