  • Northern lights near Petosky….

Posted by Becky on August 26, 2018 at 6:28 pm

    Hey y’all!

Saw this today and thought if there is another no rally rally at Petosky in the future perhaps it could be a tad later in August – it would be awesome for those of us who live south of the 45 parallel if we had the chance to see the northern lights!

    Just sayin…..

What time of year does that happen?

Can happen at any time of year, is dependent on sunspot activity. Ionizing radiation levels drive the lights. As it is darker more hours in the winter, more people see them in the winter months due to most of us sleep during traditional “go to bed” hours and in the summer most are asleep by the time it is dark, especially in the northern latitudes where the lights are the most prominent.

There is an 11 year solar activity cycle, but that is getting more grimbly and beyond the scope of this reply.
