Has anyone used the NCDOT ferry system in their Prevost? They say they can accommodate any vehicle that is legal on the highway.

They can handle the bus. We have not taken our Prevost but we did take our Eagle conversion a few years back from Cedar Island to Okracoke and then on the smaller ferry to Hatteras Island. We were also towing a Honda Pilot at the time. If you are over 65 feet with a tow car you will have to unhook and take it on by itself.

I took a much smaller plastic coach on with no issues.

For the best approach to the ramps, you might asked them at water tide level they are closest to being flat. Generally, the lower the tide the steeper the ramps. Unlike the Alaskan Ferry System, the NC ferries can’t adjust the approach angle, or they couldn’t a few years ago.

I wouldn’t consider driving on with the tow attached. These guys are on a schedule and if you are forced to back-up you are going to have a pretty upset crew.

I have not used those specifically however I do do have lot of experience with ferry’s and my Prevost. I live on an island off an island so every time we travel we take at least one most times two ferry’s. They take all highway vehicles however there only certain boats that work and that’s where local knowledge or a phone call helps. The next factor is the tide height and how the ramps are to the ferry itself. Be sure you are very familiar on your lift override and we would typically lift front and rear all the way up each crossing. We always disconnected the toad and then reconnected after the crossing. The smaller boats 22 cars you will tip the boat when you pull on. The larger boats 200 cars are not effected however the height can be a concern. Some take reservation some do not. Call the company ahead is my advise. We typically check the tide heights and plan our arival and departure times accordingly. There’s. An app for that. Hope this helps have fun.

Also go to http://www.ncdot.gov/ferry and you will see a lot of the details, rules, schedules and prices. The Cedar Island to Okracoke required us to have a reservation. Okracoke to Hatteras did not. we had no problem towing the car but we were under 65 feet.

Thanks for all of the help. My assessment is that it is doable, but not without complications. I think bus travel has enough challanges without adding another one. It sound like there is a chance of perhaps dragging if all conditions are not ideal. I may consider it in the future, but for our upcomming trip, I think I’ll choose another route.

    Thanks again!
